One is only as young as one chooses to feel….we’re in the mid-range group, finally jumping in just about the time things were starting to shift. No more locationless or virtuals, EarthCaches starting to take off.

We really enjoy hearing the stories from the true “oldtimers,” when caches weren’t in every guardrail or city park, but encouraged you to get out and explore. The stories of “The Gauntlet,” or some of the very early events and the fun make us wish we’d been part of it all much sooner. We love to seek out those really old caches that are still around, allowing us just a glimpse of what the sport was in its early years.

One thing we started to notice with our own caching after awhile was, I don’t want to say boredom, but the phenomenon of already knowing what we’d find. Sometimes that is just experience, but we had started getting the inside scoop from previous finders or all that, and we realized….then we’ve lost the element of surprise. For that reason, we decided to pretty much stop the whole phone a friend or getting the inside line ahead of time, so the surprise element will still be there. Oh yeah, we’ve caved a few times now and then, mostly under peer pressure [;)] but have discovered that by just going out, seeing what happens, and logging the dreaded DNF if that’s the result, we manage to keep it interesting for ourselves.

Otherwise, why not just go for a hike? Or skiing? Or canoeing?

Helidood, We may be able to stage this photo for you. Our son once convinced a gullible friend of his that he was an alien. And…..I do own an alien puppet, LOL. Occupational hazard of being a storyteller (although I never use the darn things when telling stories myself!)

I’m speaking as myself and not a member of the board here. We’ve never posted either kind of note on any cache. If we did think there were maintenance issues we couldn’t help, we’d contact the owner by email.

As to the needs archived, that’s a tough call. We have encountered caches we were convinced were gone, only to see someone else come along, often with just a few finds, and they find it. That’s the nature of the game. I just don’t like to assume that if we don’t find it that it’s not there.

It’s a fine line, I know. I do know Dave has said that judiciously applied, posting such logs is a service to the reviewer.

All those bears in the other thread….the ones with bits of camo tape and McDonalds toys in their poop!

The ammo can…..a thing of beauty, especially this one.

Well, sounds like they take a more reasoned approach than happened here a year ago, when one was treed in a park, they came in and killed it out of the tree in front of little kids and everything.

Evacuate the park, move the bear along. They claimed not to have access to a tranq gun, but the Humane Society says they have one and it would have simply taken the phone call. I think they have a better set of guidelines now. There was a lot of public outcry when this happened.

As an aside…..we did a wonderful cache in the Black River Forest area this afternoon, and spotted a couple piles of bear scat. No flannel bits or bells, so must have been black bear!

No, and if someone places any…..they go on our ignore list! Any more comments on that place and its signage and I risk having my post deleted from a family friendly site!

Duck Egg is a very nice cache, but we didn’t see any freehikers on our visit.

Howsomever, I AM considering placing one of the challenge caches in that forest and the weather’s getting hotter. They do explain it’s just the feeling of freedom from clothes they enjoy. There’s another place outside Black River Falls for the other stuff. Big fence all the way around, and big sign telling what’s inside, LOL.

Haven’t come across reports of paranormal stuff there…..I’m always looking for that stuff, searching for local ghost stories to develop. It’s a VERY large cemetery, several blocks long. Possibly bigger than that big one in Appleton with the creepy grottoes.

There are SO many stories in that place one could develop. The local historical society does a cemetery walk each fall, and the people they select are different each year. Owen Withee, founder of those towns, is buried here. (Go figure). The Hixon family has an awesome monumental statue. Then there is the city’s long brewing history (which I think could make for a really fun WIG). I thought of the hundreds of photos I have taken in cemeteries as well. I know people deep into geneaology take them, too. It was just quite surprising. If I pursue this, I’ll talk to the people on the board and I’m thinking they’ll be okay with it. I actually would want to gather photos from the archives for the actual cartridge, so maybe I could skip the monument photos anyway.

The only thing I can think of is the fact that many of the LaCrosse area’s prominent families are buried here, and perhaps someone didn’t like to think anyone could come around and take “their” photo. I was surprised as well. It could be a really cool walking tour cache, but I’ll have to reconsider, given the lengthy list of rules they have here.

On the other side of the coin, their website has a walking tour document. So go figure.

I can accomplish the same thing with a multi. It will require more permission hoops to place the waypoint containers, is all. It is completely residential, which is part of the reason I’d rather have tried a WIG, so that a person can stand on the sidewalk, look at the historic homes for the needed info, and move on. Searching on the properties will just look weird, and even if I make the hides really, really easy, people will still be poking around. There is a nice location that suits the theme, away from the residential area and I’m sure I’d be able to get permission to hide the cache at that site. I could just drop a bison somewhere on a sign, but that’s generally not our style, and the intent of the WRR would not really be highlighted that way.

Challenge caches these days can’t require you to complete all of the caches on your “list.” You can ask for about half to be found, but the element of choice is the key.

I’ve got a couple I’m putting out sooner or later and have talked with the reviewers about how to do this. No more “Hungry” type caches are allowed.
