. Mom made a comment this morning that Trekkin’ and I are “stuck dealing with these elderly coots” and I responded that most people our age aren’t lucky enough to still have all their parents around. That gave her a moment’s pause.
Thanks Lois. I commented on how we are lucky, not “stuck” as Mom suggested this morning. She is 93 and Dad’s almost 90. Dick’s parents are close to Dad’s age. And so far, they all live in their own home (when they aren’t in a hospital). Very lucky indeed.
Thanks Dawn. Dad has lots of medical issues that can complicate matters, but those are great ideas. He is in renal failure and gets dialysis, but that’s been on schedule so things should be good with that, anyway. At least he thought his nurse was a person, not a critter. I hear you….one of those things we can laugh at later, but not when it’s happening.
I know, everyone’s sick except me, I think. I’m not even thinking about looking for caches. It is cold and miserable out there, and just driving on these roads in traffic is as much as I care to experience the Minnesota cold right now. I have no desire to show I’m a “real geocacher” by going out in lousy weather, even for p/gs. Dad is apparently being discharged tomorrow, but he’s not always dealing in reality right now, which concerns me. It took a lot for my brother and me to convince him that the nurse is not one of the Obama daughters, for instance. Then the next moment, he’s right on track with his normal self. Sigh. Hope all my assorted friends and family out in Geocacheland get well soon! Thanks for the good vibes, too. Not how I expected to spend this break between Christmas and NY. I’ve been in Minneapolis since Wednesday. Both parents admitted to the hospital late Tuesday night. Influenza and they had the shots. Mom got sprung last evening. Dad is not doing as well. So now I’m between the apartment with Mom and the hospital with Dad. So much fricking fun….not! I’m not sure how long I’ll be up here.
We don’t usually cache on Christmas, either, though it has happened on those years when family Christmas had to be a different day.
Christmas last night was wonderful. Our old dog, for whom this is no doubt her last Christmas, was so happy the whole gang was here. We were all happy to see her like that.
We got nothing here. But last night, we went to Perrot State Park for a Solstice bonfire and hike by night. They got three inches and we had lovely snow falling the entire hike. That’s only about 15-20 miles north and a bit west of here.
I’m hoping at least some of our Snowies move across the river to my count circle by Saturday. It’s been a phenomenal irruption year. If you do see one, please keep your distance. Though it’s a sign of a good breeding year, these birds are stressed and need to rest. If they notice you….you’re too close!
Your birding PSA for the day. 😉
In other news….while Trekkin’ is braving travel back home right now, I’m staying put. Partly because of the bird count, but also because our elderly dog just needs someone around all the time now….or we have messes to clean up. Doggie diapers just don’t stay on her. Hard to watch this decline, it’s been pretty rapid, 🙁 but she still wants to be a dog, so she’s still with us.
Nothing here but a nasty cold wind. Early release school day, so I took our grand-daughter over to the FWS Visitor Center to get a look at one of the Snowy Owls that’s been hanging around the area for over a week now. She might have looked longer if it wasn’t so blasted cold. As it was, she was happy to wander the displays there, even though she’s seen them all many times.
Pooh’s Pal was with us this weekend, and he stayed here with Trekkin’ while I went to a pop-up shop at a new yarn shop in LaCrosse. When I got home, they were out looking for one of our caches. Packers sucked, so why sit in, right?
We’re gradually archiving many of ours as they experience issues. Just went out and retrieved one yesterday, one the day before. Honestly…..an awful lot of “takers” around here and we don’t get much in the way of logs anymore…”tftc” or those rambling pasted logs. It’s just not fun for us these days, so why keep them alive? There’s an interesting thread in the grounspeak forums about the decline in placements. Nothing stops us from hiking or paddling around here, we don’t require a box to be found in order to do that. There are always birds. 😉
Sooo….I just volunteered to be a volunteer for the Coulee Region Improv and Sketch Festival. I’d like to dig in deeper and rehearse with the local improv troupe, but I’ll start here. At least this way I won’t forget about the festival. This will be its 4th year. I didn’t know of it until the second year and have had interfering things each of those times.
So you’re just doing stout right now, or are you doing more?
Just the stout for now. When we bought all this stuff at the brewing supply place, they told us stout was most likely to provide the most first timer’s success. We have our propane tank now, but I had a newsletter to get out and likely a grandkid here shortly. We’d like to venture into IPAs, as those are favorites, but if this turns out decent…we’ll drink it. 😀
We brew tomorrow!
We thought we’d deal with this crummy weather by finally beginning the process of home brewing this afternoon. Only bought the supplies and stout kit ages ago. Well….not happening. The one place near us with propane tanks was mobbed. Trekkin’ didn’t feel like dragging a tank to Best Buy, where he could get closest parking. Or waiting for anyone to be free to help retrieve a tank from the cage.
Ah well, tomorrow is another day. At least we got our little propane fryer thing put together and gathered up the supplies.
Time to go do a couple crosswords.
Okay, so not only it is taking forever here, but it doubled my post. I know I didn’t do that!
No GIFF event for us..closest is a couple hours one way and the weather’s lousy. Probably a blessing in disguise…our old dog rebounded, but now her ability to “hold it” is failing and we need to be around to try and get her outside. Two accidents already today. Doggie diapers don’t stay on her. She still wants to do dog stuff, though. Sad situation.
