Shane, Thanks for pointing out those stats. Maybe looking at numbers like that for selected parks would help nudge things more. That’s a great point of view. I know there are some parks that we might never have visited ourselves if not for the caches placed there Buckhorn and Merrick spring to mind.
Congratulations on the milestone. We hope to find some of the many new hides you’ve placed to our east some day soon!
10/21/2009 at 10:32 pm in reply to: State Parks – Can we do something like this in Wisconsin? #1915501Speaking on the board’s behalf…..we have in mind something similar to what’s been done successfully in Minnesota and some other states. It never hurts to have others contact any state parks folks they may have a relationship with to show interest.
There have been contacts and discussions. It took quite some time for some of those who came before my time to get us the policy we have in place to gain permission for cache placements on DNR managed lands, and then to get a similar process for EarthCache placements. Some things are embraced quickly by the powers that be at these agencies, others….longer. I do know some individual park rangers have expressed interest for their own park programming, and as mentioned by EnergySaver, some parks have embraced it in a big way.
Ken, thanks for pointing out that article, it can’t hurt for the DNR folks to see evidence of the MN program’s success.
I have seen something like this in Minnesota. We figured out the camera was located within a fake wood duck house. Our inner high school sophomore had many evil ideas of things to do near it, but we allowed our grown up selves to prevail.
Too many other people around, is all!
Zoom, zoom, zoom for not the O’Reilly Guy! 😉 Those are some serious numbers, my friend! Fitting for the founder of the WWGA! LOL
You mean she isn’t already the EarthCache Mistress? Several thousand congrats to you, m’dear!
Congrats Pat and Mark on a milestone! So has your find count surpassed your forum post count yet?
Have fun. It wasn’t as tough as we first thought it would be, but I do recall we had our Wellingtons along and found them helpful. We went about this same time last year, really enjoyed it.
I’d like to add one more aspect to this whole NM issue. We have never posted a NM in over 5600 finds, but instead have contacted owners via email if we couldn’t help out with the problem. In most cases, folks aren’t willfully leaving trashy caches out there. Often, it goes back to people never logging DNFs so that the owner knows there’s a problem. A DNF can work as a “pre” NM log, in a way.
Sometimes…..even when we write, nothing happens. I do like to err on the side of caution, because we ourselves have had times in our lives….we’re in that mode right now, in fact….where the condition of one of our caches is the least of our concerns. Yes, I’m home posting right now. Yes, Trekkin’ is off with friends racking up caches for the weekend. It’s called….one of us gets therapy, one holds down the fort.
Please keep in mind before going off on someone’s cache that maybe they have something else going on in their world that makes this whole world of geocaching seem rather trivial. I have seen a good number of NM logs that are really downright rude, and may not be what a person wants to open when they get around to checking their email.
Sorry, can’t help you….dog destroyed my 60Cs the other day. I should take a photo and post it. I’d be surprised after her mischief if I could get a lock with 500 feet accuracy.
Thanks for the help, I have used all of these except the open library one. I guess it would be a good idea to pay my library fine so I can check out the classic Martin book, which is excerpted on the wisonline site.
I checked out the area in question, had a blast hiking a good 4-5 miles through the sands and down to the stream. Up and down, beautiful spots. I did not get to the part I wanted, because I could hear gunshots over that way. Was wearing orange, but still…probably best to let them hunt in peace.
Scared up two Woodcock, a covey of Ruffed Grouse, walked literally into a flock of hen turkeys…..great way to spend my afternoon! Not sure I even want to share this spot with anyone else. I even used my GPSr for purposes originally intended….to help me track my way around and mark interesting spots. Imagine that!
Wow…..that has to be as close to being a bird as a human being can get.
I broke out into a cold sweat at the shot of them jumping off that precipice!
Way to go, Jacob!
Well, the forecast even down here in sunny bluff country has the s word in it, too. So it doesn’t matter where we are.
Unless we want to go to Pamida!
I was on Monday. Kind of frustrating when the darn thing finally came through and it was yesterday. I really don’t mind caching in rainy weather all that much, but I have a medical condition that flares up this time of year anyway, and precipitation makes it worse. So I was not a happy camper!
I’d be less grumpy if I wasn’t paying for a service to get them, but…..
Hope they come through soon.
