I wouldn’t make this a side trip, but the main event. There are currently 60 active caches on the island, and because of the terrain, you will be working for many of them. But very well worth the effort. We truly had a blast and saw many areas of the island untouched by tourists. Fun time!
We were able to buy two day tickets from Sheplers for $33. Otherwise, it would have cost each of us $50. The bikes are an extra $7.50,. but rentals on the island start at $7/hour for a one speed. Two fo the four of us camped on the mainland, we packed most of our food and enjoyed just a little fudge and a celebratory ice cream cone on the island, keeping our expenses for the trip fairly reasonable, considering.
You’re kidding, right? Not down there!
Glad everything worked out for you. rabies series shots are no fun. A neighbor got bit by a bat and she had that fun time.
Yesterday when I was at the vet’s with my son and his dog, a family came in with a tiny wild kitten they’d found on the road, apparently hit by a car. I have “issues” with feral cats, and that’s just one of them. Glad your neighborhood ferals didn’t share disease with you, too!
Well, this year it won’t only be zumasnoring.
Someone on our team snores, and depending on which of us you ask, the other will point fingers, LOL. We’re really close to the highway, I’d have to look up the campsite number. Maybe we could get together a campsite list here so it can be printed off before we leave? I’d be glad to start that thread.
Milo and Otis? Aren’t they cachers from Iron county?
I think you must be confusing them with Trekkin’ and Mr. Timberline Echoes!
What a fun story, makes you wonder what might have happened. And what are the odds that geocachers would have it wash up on their shoreline? That’s a lot of lakefront!
That’s really an amazing feat, peach! Hope to grab a few of yours sometime, especially that DNF one!
Congratulations and thanks for adding to our fun.
Thanks everyone, I just reserved a site way up in that corner, pretty darn close to the road. I got tired of clicking all those little red dots, but hopefully we’ll be close by. We’re looking forward to the craziness! drhaas is dumping us at the campground and heading somewhere comfy, LOL.
You mean he talks normally below the border? LOL
We really did have an awesome time, fueled by DOC.’s incredible shore lunches. We did not stay on the island. We were chatting with some locals who told us that if you watch the papers and such, there are good deals to be had at the B and Bs that bring it within reach of anyplace on the mainland. That was another fun aspect of our travels, as we chatted with several local folks. Caching the island gets you away from the touristy places to where people live. I loved the freedom of riding around and not having to dodge anything other than an occasional horse pulling a buggy!
Some people stayed in a hotel. Some of us camped. Guess which was which! LOL
Run, don’t walk, to visit PW’s “St. Peter’s Dome.” It was awesome, and though it requires a long hike, it’s not too bad for those of us used to putting in some distance to get to a cache. Plus there are a couple other caches on the way in. When we got home from our last trip, a bunch of new things popped up in the area, too.
We’re heading up to Mackinac tomorrow. We’ll let you know what the dozen plus ECs in that area are like upon return!
If our butts aren’t too sore to sit at the computer after all the biking! 🙄
My father-in-law asked me how the keep organic honey bees from going to non-organic flowers. I told him small electronic shock collars.
LOL You mean you haven’t waypointed all the organic flower fields and given the bees their own little units?
There is some concern down this way brewing among the many, many certified organic farmers. With the torrential rains, the possibility of run-off from nearby fields that are not organic looms as a threat to their certification. The Community Supported Agriculture farm to which we belong is luckily a ridgetop farm. They have neighbors in the valley who were not so lucky last summer and had to close it up all together.
What amazes me most is that really, once past all the certification processes, producing food this way is usually not as expensive. Any way you look at it, farming is hard work, organic or not. Hurray for all the small family farmers who are staying in business.
We have enjoyed the Waukesha springs, too. I also had no idea of the history of the area and the significance of that area as a spa-type spot in the past. When there’s an interesting story behind a feature, it makes for a good earthcache. Not everything on the earth is a spectacular cave or rock outcrop, but it all is part of the geological story.
I agree about the spring with the gorgeous tile work, too. We haven’t done all of them down that way, but that was one we did. I also thought the idea of the little “ghost spa” in the Kettle Moraine unit was rather cool.
(Especially the day we did it, when the thermometer on the dashboard read minus 21!)The problem I’m having with it is that the listings, or any page, like our profile, is far wider than my screen allows me to display. Scrolling sideways doesn’t help. So if I want to see my caches, like how many earthcaches and puzzles and so on, I can’t even see that tab to click it. It cuts me off in the middle of the “trackables” tab.
Are they assuming everyone has those nice big monitors? Cause we don’t. Hopefully it will all work out in a day or two. It does look as if there are some nice new features.
I don’t know if they are still listed, but time was, when you clicked on Lil Otter’s profile, you could see all the caches ascribed to her. Since most have been adopted by others of us, perhaps what’s left on her profile would be those “missing” caches. If archived, there’d be a red line struck through the cache name.
I know that back in the day, many of the waterfall caches were part of a big puzzle she set up. Before our time, but Timberline Echoes has mentioned that.
I have not added links like that to any of our listings, but try looking at what happens here on the forums when you insert a link by clicking the url thingie here. Look at that stuff and then try placing it at the beginning and end of your cache listing link. I think the stuff here is all html, so it would work there, too.
I’m sure someone who actually knows what they’re doing will weigh in soon, too. Is this going to be located in Wisconsin?
Congratulations, what a great way to hit a big milestone….with a big rock!
