Ralph, We like that site, too. We also track with the cachestats program, but appreciate those very same aspects you mentioned, the D/T chart and the ability to sort by location. While it’s fun to see who the windbags are (guilty!), that’s just fluff and in our opinion, could be dropped.
04/07/2008 at 4:47 pm in reply to: IATCC รขโฌโ Ice Age Trail Cold Cache Earthcache series #1887557Renae, I’ve heard rumors of this project and am excited it is going to happen. I’d be glad to help near Baraboo, as I am eyeing up a feature in the state park, anyway. The other one I wanted to do over there got nixed. An awesome area is in danger of being closed to the public altogether because of some poor choices of a few. Too bad.
Hey, SGH, I actually tried to unearth our kids’ metal detector to aid in finding “winter friendly” ones, LOL. If I’d have found where it was stored, I’d have used it!
I’ve been past those lime kilns in years past, taking our son to Bible camp. Can’t wait to head downriver and get all these.
I had to accept my first “no” for an earthcache. It’s a beautiful location of great geological interest, but apparently there have been problems with lots of unauthorized use…beer parties, cliff jumping including a death as a result and general trampling of the area. I completely understand, and the land manager acknowledges that earthcachers would “get it,” but they just need to downplay that site altogether. It’s a shame, but I wasn’t surprised, given the death from reckless behavior at that site last year.
Good grief, when you click on a HotWheels link in the cache listing, it takes you to the HotWheels website!
I’m sure it’s unintentionally commercial. I just had to rework a cache submission because I mentioned names of local eateries. Not to promote them, just as banter in the listing. I do hope your son’s cache can be published. I know we’ve seen caches with those names in them, too.
cheeto, What a great accomplishment, congratulations to you. Your stats make for fascinating reading, too.
I can’t answer for his experience zuma, but in mine, the Lonely Ones have been for the most part awesome caches in places that take a little work to reach. One might have been “carried” a little adrift from its original location by last summer’s flooding, but it wasn’t that far from GZ.
I can’t really say that any of them have been lame caches.Hey Ralph, We have that challenge on our “to do” list, and I’m tellin’ ya…..luck has not been on our side so far! We have like 2-3 of them done. We went for one when we were in Hudson, and it was buried in snow and ice. Went for the Punch Bowl one and the final was missing!
Went for the one on the Ice Age Trail, tried to get the first one in that puzzle and the snow and ice were brutal there, too. Those three guys deserve a couple 12-packs for getting this one as they did! With less snow and ice, we’ll be back on the hunt now! LOL Be watching for our own challenge with nice swag to pop up very soon. ๐
Can a person hike below the moraine and take elevation differences? Perhaps one on each side, and compare the two?
That’s the hardest part, I agree.
There are a couple I did not use the logo—out of state placements. However, a couple other out of state placements included it, it sort of depended on the circumstances of the placement.
Of the 29 we have, all but two have it.
Yeah, mosquitoes too. DOC. found one flying at Devil’s Lake State Park.
If marc’s going to be German, does that mean he can log virtuals around the world without ever leaving his lovely little laptop? ๐
We’re gold earthcache masters, one state away from Platinum, and have 4 of our own (a fifth in the works) and 34 finds. So I think we have a little learnin’, too. Great explanation, Anne, you should make it into a sticky!
I made the requested changes to ours. I also am pulling together a list of ones that aren’t on your radar and will get those to you in a day or two.
I know our placements are among those that are probably more like “school talk” as far as the educational aspect. That’s probably a reflection of our day jobs as educators. A teacher really can’t help but teach, no matter what we’re doing.
Everyone has an opinion on the dos and don’ts, but in the end, if you follow the guidelines regarding permission, place caches you’d like to find.
If someone else likes those types of caches, they’ll come. If not, no problem. There should be room for all, whether traditional caches or earthcaches. Look forward to seeing what you place!Yeah, see the actual final will be pretty easy, and the terrain could probably stay easy, but difficulty would be high. Robin rated the difficulty final for hers at a 5, I believe, which seems reasonable when you consider a person needed to find 50 other caches to obtain those coordinates!
