Gary,
Congratulations! I hope you got the other earthcache nearby, The Weeping Wall. In many ways, I thought that one was even more impressive, but they both are well worth a winter visit.
If it makes any of you that had planned to go to Effigy last weekend feel better, they closed the park and sent the rangers home on Sunday. You could have still hiked the trails, but I’m sure they are lovelier in nice weather!
Congrats on the Platinum, Gary! I see we were crossing paths in a couple spots yesterday. We just got our Gold, and only have to do some earthcaches in Illinois to go Platinum. I keep trying to talk Trekkin’ into heading out west for that last state, but he’s not buying it!
Has anyone here ever looked at the caching possibilities on Mackinac Island? There are like 57 caches, 7 or 8 of which are earthcaches. I think we have to do an early summer trip that way! Or maybe burn a couple personal days in the spring to get there before the crowds.
A canoe run would be awesome up there! I actually heard from my contact at Effigy Mounds. He had heard from Jean, who was cruising the sites, I guess, and she wanted ideas of people to contact about cache placements. It would be nice to work with them to put out some fun yet environmentally appropriate caches, especially if it features the paddling aspects of the riverway.
I honestly have to admit to not a lot of knowledge about those waters, so learning more and testing them out would be great fun.
I think whatever makes it easiest for Dave to manage should be the way to go. I cannot imagine what a big task it must be to set this all up and then try to monitor it, and as a Wisconsin cacher, appreciate him doing so.
I have not been playing this month, but had a lot of fun finding the ones I found last month and will probably play again. It’s a great way to help check on caches and see some more remote areas (which tend to be my favorite caches, anyway). Also, it’s getting folks to log those DNFs, LOL (my personal pet peeve). As for Sagasu….well, doncha think he’s going to run out of caches to check up that way? Then he can come to other parts of the state and do cache maintenance for the rest of us. Yeah, that works! 😉
Well, if Jean can write a log like that one, the worst of the drama must have passed! Thanks for passing this one along, I’ll be seeing her tomorrow and can get the story first hand! LOL
Have them talk with Ken Block, who is the chief ranger at Effigy Mounds. In general, containers are not allowed in the National Parks, but he was very willing to work with me on getting an earthcache there, and has just seen the first log from a cacher and liked what he saw.
It’s good news, that’s for sure!
Thanks for your input, everyone. We mostly needed the info on the correct mapping program. Trekkin’ always grumbles about forgetting to grab his topo maps, but I figure, when we get to a place, you can kind of figure out if the lines are close together or far apart by looking!
We’ll shop around a bit.
Man, the guy is a machine! Lonely Caches, big numbers….couldn’t happen to a nice guy! Way to go, Dave!
Yes, please don’t travel those winding roads in crummy weather. Those mounds have stood there for eons, they’ll be there when you can visit!
We’re getting away from this weather and heading up…toward the Chippewa Valley with friends tomorrow! LOL
We did this one last night with drhaas (half of them, anyway) and we had a blast.
Oh, and I believe I captured the ghost coon on film. Check our log! 😉 We’re thrilled that coulee country finally has its own night cache, thanks for all your hard work, Dean!
Oh my gosh, I hope the cache lives up to the hype! We certainly enjoyed it.
If you want one to catch on the return trip, we just got back from doing our area’s first night cache. Four miles round trip hiking in the snow in the swampy bottoms of the Black River.
GC199N9We had a blast….and that ghost coon is still out there, somewhere! 😉
And yes, the starting coordinates are right behind the Visitor Center, along the boardwalk.
Have fun!
Unless I missed some essential command, our secrets are safe from google street cam so far!
I grew up in a household where political discussions were the fodder of dinnertime conversation…every day. Mom was president of the League of Women Voters and had been a delegate to the state’s Republican convention more than once.
People always said, “You’ll get more conservative with age.” Not really. My mom sure hasn’t! She rarely votes Republican anymore, saying that the party now is not the Republican party she knew. I think I just keep swinging more and more out of mainstream party politics altogether, and wish that our country could move beyond what is basically two-party politics. The last big policital rally I attended was when Al Gore kicked off his last bid here in LaCrosse on the riverboat. It was pretty exciting to be part of that (and I have the photos to prove I was there, ask Mrs. TE, she’s seen them!)
I have to agree with Ralph, this is a very interesting year to watch. No matter which candidate takes the Democratic nomination, it will be history in the making. I am still undecided at this point, and will admit that in the last gubernatorial election, I voted for a third party candidate.
I thought you guys were going to burn up the logging software last night. Incredible achievement, Seth and Marie. How long before you guys have Illinois in the bag? 😉
I saw him and Honeybunnies logging like mad last night. Whew! Congrats on a biggie, Ralph!
