Tents? You’re supposed to use tents? Trekkin’ doesn’t even bother with those on his historical treks. *Maybe* a tarp from a tree. He packs it all in, each item in his “kit” documented by three primary sources of the era of the 1750s Great Lakes fur trade, probably weighing less than 40 pounds all told.

As a family, we had a small canvas “wedge” tent, with period correct accoutrements, which included flint and steel for fire starting. I always had to depend on the guys, or we’d eat raw meat, LOL. There was a bit of waffling regarding the historicity of things in a family camp, but we tried to keep things pretty pure in the public view, anyway.

I have to say, when we were sitting in such digs during tornado warnings, lightning storms and the like, the 30 foot camper sounds great! Hope you find a park you like. Have you looked at Beaver Creek Valley near Caledonia, or Big Island near Albert Lea? We also enjoyed a camping trip eons ago with the kids at one called “Lake Louise” state park. I’m pretty sure all those places have campsites that can accomodate the big guys!

Check out the River Museum in Dubuque. All that stuff in one place! Also there’s a fun little steep railcar, but I don’t know if it operates in the winter or not.

I’m looking forward to doing all those Dubuque area earthcaches, too. Our son went to Bible Camp at Camp Wyoming a couple years, and one of them was a canoe and cave camp. His clothes were trashed after crawling in those caves (some of the ones in the earthcaches, even), but he had a blast.

Must have been posting at the same time. You also aren’t real far from the Field of Dreams site. Haven’t actually been there, so I can’t speak to its worthiness.

Probably not these, because of the spiritual aspect of the land. But I’m not sure.

There are a mess of caches in LaCrosse now on the mountain biking trails. The local veloclub has done a TON of work on those trails, too.

            Gary,

I’m hoping this one will be up and running in a week or two. For this one, the hike is 2 miles round trip, but the waypoints were so interesting, it didn’t seem that long when we hiked it on Sunday. lagrac’s earthcache is just downriver from here, about five miles driving. It’s a wonderful little corner of Iowa to explore, one that dispels the popular image of the state as nothing but cornfields.

I do agree that earthcaches should continue to bring us to interesting places and features. In the case of this one, the seeker is looking at how the area geology shaped the culture that became known as the Moundbuilders. Their descendants today are the Ho-Chunk, therefore the sites at the Monument are sacred ground. Hence the need to handle this one with care (as all should be, actually!) It’s really been fascinating to me as a storyteller to read all the controversies surrounding the mounds and their meaning, when the oral traditions of the Ho-Chunk explain it all.

The view at the highest point is to die for, by the way. The confluence of three rivers, a string of mounds along the ridge behind you, the blufflands along the river….ah!

Have you been to Galena Illinois? Lots of antiques, history, close to the river and I’m sure other things, too.

Glad to hear it all turned out for the best. The “they hit a deer” email was a bit scary.

Two boys, both of them with Calvetti DNA. She has my undying sympathy and I’ll be around in oh, 16 years to listen, LOL.

The comments about this being the first confirmed one make me wonder…..what happened to our plaster casts? They confirmed those, at least verbally.

And to think I was caching in that region, in the woods, by myself, a week ago. I never see anything cool, it almost always runs and hides.

                  Except for all the wolves.

Should this cache be added to the current list? It hasn’t been found since the beginning of August, although there are a number of logs following that date in which Hotdogs Off the Trail were replacing and refinding the remains of the original that had been vandalized.

                    Just wondering. Not hunting now!

3_Hawks, there were also sightings down in the junkyard near Nutbush around the same time. We’d been hiking with two other families, all of us possessed of a good share of woods knowledge due to our hobbies. Our son was 3 at the time (hiking to the top of Perrot Ridge!) and his buddy was 5. I think I was about 6 months pg with son number 2 at that point, yeah, we can be a bit nuts! They’d picked up tracking books at the park office for little kids and having fun when they spotted these and couldn’t find them in the booklet. The grown-ups took one look and kind of gasped. One of the parents had spent an entire summer doing survival stuff in the Alaskan wilderness and said, “Hmm, if you hear anything off in the shadows in the woods saying in a deep voice…’Yo….me-OW!” just back away!”

Also, a cache we did a couple of weeks ago, ShiftMadCity, out in the middle of Bear Bluff country, mentioned big cat tracks about three winters ago in a log or the cache listing. Like the size of some guy’s size 11 boots. 😯

Blame the weather! When we were out in that insane weather all day Saturday, I grew to see the merit of 1/1s in certain conditions. Have never been real fond of P & Gs, but they were my best friend when it was 40 below!

As for the marc groupie thing……hmmmm.

We found tracks in Perrot Park about 18 years ago. We talked with the rangers, who denied it at first, but then went back and got plaster casts. At that point, they admitted that there have been sightings over the years, but as the article says, they are very secretive. Reading up on them, there is really very little known about their habits and lifestyle, other than they eat meat!

We had about one day of excitement before you two guys really went for broke! I would guess that Dave’s success in revisiting all of marc’s puzzles speaks to the wisdom of saving your puzzle solutions. We haven’t really cached any of those puzzles yet, but we’ve done a mess of them in the Rochester MN area, and I’d solve, find and toss. I don’t get those ones I see up your way with photos and nothing else. I always thought I was one of those gestalt type thinkers, but I dunno!

Ralph, we have no delusions that we can ever catch seldom|seen or sagasu, but it was fun to grab these today. It made going all that distance for Crane Spotting worthwhile. Crane Spotting was worth it in and of itself, actually, as were the others I did today.

We haven’t even started revisits of any nearby Lonely Caches, suppose we could do that, too. Do you think those guys can keep this up month after month? I’m sure marc is loving all the maintenance Dave is doing for him!

Thank you, Dave! We are less than 15 pages from being done and you’re right. It would suck!

I saw those logs and thought, whew! We’re excited about maybe getting to less than 10 more Wisconsin pages soon, LOL.
