We did find that one, actually. Guess I was talking to her more about that darn cute new member of her pack!
Yup, that’s it. Green Breasted Mango. I’m feeling a bit like a traitor to my green birding ethics, but heck. People are driving there from West Virginia and Ontario to see this bird, driving three hours is nothing compared to that!
There are 15 other North American records. All but one was just north of the Rio Grande. The other was in North Carolina. Ornithologists are hoping it will figure out it needs to head south before too long. Someone mentioned otherwise trapping it and placing it at the rainforest display in Olbricht Gardens, but that was just talk.
I can make up stuff as good as the next guy! LOL
I think we’ve totally hijacked this thread now, but glad to be of service, Coastiegirl!
I *think* I’m going down to Beloit on Friday to see a really rare bird that’s been hanging out there. And caching my way there and back. How close is Whitewater to the interstate? There are a couple earthcaches near there!
Ah, so THAT’S the problem, is it Mathman? Hmm, should I show you what I can do with a palm when people get cheeky? 😉
This was a fun one. Better just after sundown or very early am. Right now, it’s pretty wet, I’m sure!

Brett, Ah. Sandhill Cranes. They are prehistoric looking, aren’t they?
Here’s a whole family picnic of them.
http://birdbrainedstories.blogspot.com/2006/06/birding-connecting-one-to-all-of.htmlBirds? You’ve got my attention, Brett. What did they look like? Did you figure out what they were?
Still Earthcache-ownerless in West Salem…..
What fun! We have managed a whole one earthcache so far ourselves, but hope to do many more. This is quite the road trip, congratulations to you all!
Hylife, did you you contact Mr. Meyer? I don’t want to be a pest, but if others have heard back, maybe I just need to resend it. Thanks for the info.
I’m not sure. I’m not sure how involved in geocaching any of the event planners are. I am hoping that the event in October involves new placements to gather and log. I wonder if they intend to have a time-limited contest to find these and then be entered into a drawing?
I guess we’ll just have to see. I have checked area logs to see if any new folks popped up over the weekend and didn’t see that. I did see one log that made me chuckle, though. A couple out hunting for the Oktoberfest medallion found a geocache, brought it home, looked it up online and discovered this whole “subculture,” LOL. They signed on, logged it and put it back where they found it.
So…..who exactly got there first? 😉 Did both teams take note of the time? LOL
Seriously, what another great way to mark such a milestone! Congratulations.

And happy anniversary, too! 😉

Congrats on this worthy milestone!
Brett, I thought they missed the boat on making it an event, too. That would have encouraged more of the locals to attend, and they’d be able to help the newbies hunt the caches.
We got 104 all on our own…the original cache, too! It was absolutely gorgeous up there with the fall colors near peak. Go read about the other one we did on 104, Foster Falls. We’re sure there’s supposed to be an easier way to get over to the cache, but ours was more fun!
We got the virt over in Ironwood, too. We missed some others we could have grabbed, but hey, Trekkin’s from there, you know, his parents live there, so it’s not like we’ll never go back! I could just cry, though. We drove right by a new cache in Ashland yesterday. Came out after I looked for stuff to hunt. Another example of why we need a Palm, LOL. It’s still up for grabs for FTF.
