Pretty crazy light show last night, but less than .25 inch of rain. No bailing this time! We are cancelling our trip west, though. Road construction and fire closures will interfere with things we’d hoped to see and do, along with the homeowner issues here. I think we’ll mosey up to Pictured Rocks once the sump pump is installed and verified operational.
Rain, rain go away! We are going to need some serious drying out here or we won’t be taking our Yellowstone trip. Our heavy clay soil, despite all our work to limit flooding, just can’t deal with much more than a quarter inch of rain before we have to bail now. 🙁 We’ll check the forecast as this week moves along and decide whether to cancel our reservations by then. I’m sure we can find something else fun to do for a shorter time closer to home if that happens.
No labor. We did the Kickapoo Reserve hiking on Saturday, hung out at home yesterday, and today we went to Weggy Winery to celebrate Trekkin’s birthday. Free bottle for the birthday boy. Later we’re heading to Pizza Doctors for Exploratory Surgery…and free dinner for the birthday boy. Do you see a theme here??? Rain is moving in as well. It was nice to have a week off of constant rain here.
Nice photo, Noonan!
After almost a two month break, we were back in the Kickapoo Reserve today to continue the year’s hiking challenge. We have 11 more hiking trail segments and the five river segments left. We’re saving one long hike for fall color. Paddling for midweek sometime soon, we hope.
Oh, and one shorter segment is being saved for a day when we can continue up the road when we’re done to go to Cowboy David’s Cookies and Cakes.
http://www.cowboydavidscookiesandcakes.com/The Packer shirt is a nice touch, though I’m sure those Bears fans would disagree. Looks like you’re in a beautiful place.
Hope you can stay awake now, Debby!
This is my day for volunteering. I gave blood. Then I stopped off to turn in my papers to be on the local Habitat building crew. I’ll be on site two weeks from tomorrow, hammer in hand. The house that is just getting started is literally right around the corner from where Trekkin’ and I lived when we were first together. Wow!
We had a short vacation with our sons and their families this weekend. First such activity since they were forced to go to the cabin as teenagers. A good time was had by all, and Trekkin’s parents enjoyed seeing us all together, too.
Eventually, they do grow up. Takes some of them longer, but they get there.
Regarding the white bird 20 feet up a tree seen by jar42 a few weeks back: Today a SnowyOwl, hit by a car in Mineral Point this morning, was admitted to a rehab center in Dane County.
So….who knows? This is kind of nuts…is it an early arrival, or one that’s hung around since last winter?
So….we haven’t looked at these kind of stats in probably a couple years, but because we’re bored, we went to the cacherstats ranking page. Currently we’re at…..drum roll….666 in the world. I hope it never changes, LOL
The distaste we have is the fact that we don’t have that kind of phone, nor do we plan to add a costly phone plan to a retiree’s fixed income. If the game evolves to that, so be it. We have other things we enjoy doing, so it’s not a huge loss to us. We’ve been able to borrow our son’s phone a couple times to do intercaches, but that’s as close as we’ve ever been to phone caching.
I came across this article the other day, an interview with the co-founder of geocaching.com It sounds like more and more, they’re looking at the game becoming a smartphone activity. Good thing we’re backing off and returning to some of our other interests, and discovering some new ones, too.

The other night after the last SUP yoga of the season, one of the gals brought beer. I had a Leinies grapefruit shandy, which sounds terrible. It really hit the spot!
The sandlanders have decided that too much driveling means not enough other stuff. They are still alive and visited one of our “regulars” here recently, which I think he already mentioned.
Last StandUpPaddleboard yoga of the season last night, and it was truly sublime. Calm lake and the full moon greeting us as we paddled back to the landing after our practice. To cap it off, one of the yogis brought beer. Leinie’s Grapefruit Shandy was perfect after that….and I usually don’t like shandies!
Next week, I’m picking up my very own paddleboard so the fun can go on a bit longer!
Johnny Baier is coming to Oshkosh on Sept. 15th. Ya hear that, Trekkin’? He got his banjo start playing at Shakey’s Pizza in Oshkosh and Fond du Lac in the 70’s. I remember a banjo player back then, but didn’t know he would become known as “the best”. Tickets are $35 for dinner/show at the Elk’s Theatre in Oshkosh. Sorry for the useful information!
I wonder if he’s on the way to La Crosse for the Banjo Jamboree. We’re going on the riverboat cruise again…our last local fun thing before heading to Yellowstone. That event is Dixeland banjo, and Trekkin’ does bluegrass, so we just go to listen.
