Well, it’s not a secret that we’ve done a bunch of them and own a few ourselves. Two aspects related to challenge caches got to us….the proliferation of all kinds of really silly ones, especially the ones encouraging quantity. Alphabet ones, find x number of animals, all that kind of thing. We can ignore that stuff, though, and have done so in the past year or so for the most part. The more troublesome aspect is all the inflated ratings showing up, or loading up certain kinds of things to meet challenges. For instance, I know not everyone loves the control date on our Wisconsin Well Rounded, but that’s why it’s there. The original one in California, older than ours, has kept that control date as well. I know that makes it harder for some folks to accomplish. There are challenges out there we may never be able to accomplish, like multiple Jasmer grids. That doesn’t mean others can’t, though. I also think the requirement that the placer meets the challenge is good. We’ve never placed one we hadn’t already met ourselves.
From reading the new guidelines, some of these things may be less of an issue now.
We’ll probably just be recovering from our trip to Yellowstone and Devils Tower. We live quite close, so we’ll do a day trip if we can come. We’ve found all those caches! LOL
We have had occasional cloudbursts, some with thunder, but then blue skies. Some rain, not enough. These storms often peel north and south around the blufflands here…..which was just fine, because I was able to go see life bird 304 tonight and stay dry. I hope to go back tomorrow with more daylight to get better photos. Birding friend’s yard is hosting a bird of the southern borderlands. Last year she had a Northern Mockingbird. It’s always fun to see birding friends at these little local stakeouts!
Hard to say if it’s for real or not. I suppose some young punks out searching for morels came upon it. Or maybe a known cacher searching (unsuccessfully) for shrooms decided to play a prank. Spike is a nice guy and a great hider. Too bad they chose to pick on him.
No rain at all. It’s in the forecast for the whole week, but so far, nothing. We could use a nice soaking. It would make pulling weeds a lot easier!
Lisa Bonet ate no basil.
So….we went out again today in the Kickapoo Reserve. Our hike was supposed to be 6.5 miles, but ended up at 8.61. We missed a turn for a loop and figured we were already at higher elevation, let’s just go do it now. Plus, it’s about 2 miles uphill from closest parking….literally! Our highest elevation was 1100 feet. We started at 834 feet, according to the topo. Most of that climb came in the first half mile.
We’re taking a break for a little bit. We are almost halfway through the trail challenge, according to segments. Not sure according to miles. We’re looking forward to paddling the 17+ miles of river trail soon. We figure we can do it in a day, just…which day?
My weekend kept getting messed up. Was supposed to be a big birding weekend, but things happen. Instead, we went out and did some more hiking for our challenge in the Kickapoo Reserve and……I got the life bird there I was hoping to finally see in Wyalusing.
Yeah baby!
Louisiana Waterthrush. There were two of them. And of course I only had my little camera along. This is one that has eluded me time after time.
Sounds like an Indigo Bunting, they are just gorgeous when the light hits them right.
We have backed WAY off of caching these days, for various reasons. We couldn’t do the campout because that’s when we were holding our rummage sale. But one of the big eye openers was when we got our new car this week. Our trade in vehicle, bought about a year after we started caching, had close to 250,000 miles on it. Not all of that came from running all over looking for boxes, but a lot of it did. And those miles didn’t typically come from traveling to new places, other than one trip to Colorado Springs. We really have enjoyed returning to other interests and not feeling our leisure time being dominated by ‘where should we go cache this weekend?’ Our monthly fuel bills these days are close to 1/3 what they were last year. Some due to drop in price per gallon, but that just accounts for a little of the total.
I’ve mentioned before that a former Green Bay Packer who helped win a Superbowl is a regular at the yoga studio where I practice. This morning, while people were coming in, one woman came in kind along with him, and they were chatting. “Do I know you from somewhere?” He modestly said, “Well, I go to a lot of the football games at _________ school, cause my son plays there.” “THAT’S got to be it!”
She had no clue. And he wasn’t one to give her one, either. Made me smile.
Yesterday I was out birding around Lake Neshonoc (home of our 4 corners challenge). Lots of great birds, including a local hotline one. Boo-yah!
Today I was out in the LaCrosse River marsh. Far fewer goslings per couple this week? :(. Nature is tough.
Both days this weekend are big birding days for me, too.
Birding is always a great excuse to explore outdoors without a GPSr. I was out all around the “lake” in town yesterday and actually spotted a pretty rare bird for our area. I haven’t been able to start a hotline bird in over three years. I was feeling pretty smug, until my rocket scientist brother emailed us an editorial cartoon that was in some major newspapers featuring his lab by name.
Oh well.
Goodbye, mega-miles Vue. Hello, new Forester. We pick it up tomorrow.
No, our rummage sale was not quite that profitable.
We’ve gone over a hundred in sales, pretty evenly split between our son and us.
now it’s raining. And cold. I think we should just quit for the day.
i have been over ruled.
So…last I looked, both our son and us had each taken in around 30 bucks. Not enough big stuff is moving, but the rains are shortly. 🙁
We have the mayfly hatch, usually in July. It can get so bad, they have to get the plows out to clear the bridge. They live one day. Don’t even have a mouth…just the parts that allow them to procreate. Like your lake flies, but bigger.
I got the Canon 18-135 with image stabilization. My kit lenses have all bit the dust, so I replaced them with this. My other lens is the Canon 100-400 with IS. I have an older big lens…..Sigma maybe?….I should try to sell.
Campers, have fun. We’re doing this rummage sale. I hope we survive it.
