I spent the day on a Habitat build site. It’s been a few months, but it was good to be back at it. I had forgotten how much my body aches in the evening after a day doing that, though! I don’t plan to be a core construction crew member like I was before, but look forward to being on site a couple times a month now.
Nope, that’s the Mississippi there. LaCrosse River is just upstream from there and a bit further north the Black dumps. I should see what tomorrow’s weather is like. Tonight might have been a nice night for that photo, but…..I’m tired of sitting in cars for a couple days!
Rod, When do you get home? We left Saturday morning and got home last night. I took a nice sunset photo of the bridge over the Mississippi our last night. I want to go to Riverside Park here and get one from there (although technically, I think that’s still the Black River before it dumps into Big Muddy). Safe travels whenever you return!
And now I’m jealous…in three years here we haven’t seen a single armadillo! No rattlesnakes either…which is a good thing.
We were so thrilled to spend a good amount of time watching it at close range. Then we were hiking up a hill between some rifle pits and there were two more. They remind me a little of weird short-eared rabbits. Kind of. Still….a roadrunner. Sigh.
Oh I’m jealous! When I was in Death Valley, we had breakfast at a place where one was *always* hanging around. They’d even given it a name. It didn’t show when I was there.
Tonight is the ghost tour. We saw armadillos on Saturday and I got some decent photos of one. I’m pretty much ready to head back home, but we leave on Saturday. Biscuit class is on Friday. I am not sure exactly what my reservation means, but it says “Regina Charboneau” for my session, so I wonder if I get my lesson from the Queen of Biscuits herself?
Rod, I figured you’d keep the green and gold, what was I thinking?
Rainy here today. We’re winding things down here. We hope to do a ghost tour at one of the antebellum homes yet. Met some folks Saturday at a Mardi Gras deal and might get together with them yet before we leave. And I still haven’t taken the biscuit class from Regina’s Kitchen. When it dries out, we’ll probably go back to the old cemetery…for the 3rd or 4th time. So many interesting things to see there. Saturday morning we pack it all up and head back home….wondering where we should go for a month next year? [;)]
Ditto 🙂 I collected lots of beads at the Barefoot Mardi Gras Parade on the beach this morning…enough to fill several ammo boxes…threw away any that were Viking, Bear, or Lion colors 🙂
So, in other words…..all of them? We got about that many ourselves, plus other weird things that hit us in the head while watching the parade. We did more Mardi Gras stuff last night at the craft brewery and made some friends. Took us until almost time to go home for that, but hey! We might get together for dinner one night this week, we’ll see.
Laissez les bon temps rouler! We just took the dog for a walk to see the floats getting ready and lined up for tonight’s Mardi Gras parade. Lots of beads on them….wonder which of us gets the most? After that, we’re heading a couple blocks down for some blues and beers. Have a great Friday!
I wonder if the heat deters people in greater numbers from geocaching in Mississippi (I just had to spell the name of the state; it’s so fun). In WI (it’s not as fun to spell) we can cache year round without discomfort. When it’s cold you just dress warmer. But when it’s hot & humid and 100+ degrees down south for a chunk of the year, many likely stay indoors with air conditioning. Just a guess. I’m not really sure how hot it gets there.
We were here the end of September. It…is…hot. And humid. It’s humid even now, our towels never seem to really dry out. So that might be part of it. But we didn’t see that people were hanging inside when we were here. I suspect to some extent there are other dynamics at work in this difference that have nothing to do with climate.
We’re a little over halfway through our time in Mississippi. While this hasn’t been a trip to geocache, we have done some of that. Here are some observations. Mississippi currently lists 7066 active caches, two of which are upcoming events. Wisconsin shows 29, 427 active caches, of which 16 are upcoming events. I know Minnesota has similar numbers to Wisconsin. It’s just interesting that in a state where the weather is warmer year round….seldom if ever snows….the caching action is so much less. Not complaining, because as I said, we didn’t come down here to cache, cache, cache. Just interesting.
We have a few days of rainout now. We had started down the road to the NWR, but in spite of what weather.com said, rain did start before 1, so we came home. We hadn’t had any complete washout days until now, but there’s a TV here, LOL Friday looks good for the Mardi Gras parade and then later we’ll walk down the street where some blues musicians will be playing. The local music scene here seems to be kind of quiet, too, which is a little disappointing. Right now, because of a few factors, Natchez is in an economic downturn.
Good morning! We haven’t done a whole lot of caching since we’ve been here….more like, “What do we want to do today? Oh, there’s a cache along the way!” kind of thin, which is pretty much how we operate these days no matter where we are. Today we’re heading with our dog to the nearby state park, which has a bunch of caches. Most have been found in the last 30 days, but these are folks who know their snakes here and other stuff. I think we might proceed a bit more cautiously. We have our vipers back home in the Driftless, but they’re *our* vipers and we know how they act. Wish us luck! I’m actually more interested in finding a Brown Headed Nuthatch or Mississippi Kite than any caches, LOL
We went to the Delta Blues Museum in Ferriday LA today. Jerry Lee Lewis is from there, and he played his first night club gig just down the hill from where we’re staying. This was a bit of info we didn’t know….Rev. Jimmy Swaggart and Mickey Gilley are his first cousins, and of course, also musical folks. They’re 6 months apart in age and grew up together. So….Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart….could not have been more opposite.
We’ve been experiencing off and on rain, so we get out and wander around to explore when it’s dry, and do some of the rainy day things otherwise. Today we learned about Muscadine grapes, unique to the southeast coast and pretty much wild….by visiting a little local winery. We picked up the CD for the cemetery tour and we’ll do that in a bit. We explored it earlier and it’s humungous, but we didn’t have the audio tour that day. Stay warm. It’s about 50 here and people are talking about “how cold” it is. Perspective.
It was gorgeous again today. We hear next week might kind of suck, so today we were on the Natchez Trace a bit. Explored Emerald Mound, the second largest second only to the one at Cahokia, visited Locust Inn and surroundings and hiked halfway up an original section of the Trace. We hope to do the rest maybe this weekend from the other end. Tonight I don’t have to cook again; we’re heading up to the Natchez Brewery for pizza and, well…beer.
Oh, and here’s something crazy….we got talking to a couple getting ready to bike halfway up the Trace. Turns out they’re from back home, the guy taught in one of the school districts where Trekkin’ taught and knows some common friends. Seriously, what are the odds?
Eat some chili for us tomorrow. Not sure what we’ll do, but I know we’ll be outside again.
Debby, We’re spending the month in Natchez MS. Cold front moved through this afternoon after a really humid and warm day. Maybe that’s why you didn’t see it. But your other assessment regarding Trekkin’ feeling cooped up….that’s about right on! We’re going slowly with leaving the dog behind. There’s this BBQ place around the corner that has top ratings and smells SO good. Hopefully I don’t have to cook tomorrow night!
Mardi Gras is a big deal here, we’re learning. We need to pick up some door decorations or something…there’s a big display when you head into Wally World (no Target). We’re seeing them all around town, like Christmas lights. They have a Krewe and there’s a parade later this month. Probably not as wild as the one in NOLA, but it will be a new experience for us!
