We played cribbage up nort’. I lost every game…except one. I beat the event host, leaving him skunked, even. :O Trekkin’, on the other hand, had some lucky hands. Fun time, fun people. Tomorrow morning we hope to do some hiking caches before heading back home. The snow here is turning into slop, plus several were out for these today, so we won’t need the snowshoes.
Snow-shooting…oh dear! 😉
Yes, robins will stick around if they have water and berries. Hackberry trees in one of our big cemeteries are a “can’t miss” for the Christmas Bird County here.
Since we’ve lived in this place over 30 years, stuff accumulates, despite my best efforts at trying to clear stuff out. I was happy tonight to pass on our old vacuum to our older son, who has his own place and needed one. He was happy to take it and save on buying one. Hurray! I’ve already passed along a small pile of kitchen linens and a few excess food prep items.
I don’t think it even makes a dent!
I hope you had additional adult help, Debby! Been there, done that…with special ed kids. Really, a fun way to spend a day of work, actually!
The family where this bird is being seen feeds black oil sunflower seed and have suet logs. She makes her own suet with lard, peanut butter and cornmeal. Darn bird was seen this morning at 7:50. I need to take another ride and get there by 7:30. This w eek end is not an option.
I saw lots of goldfinches, redpolls, both downy and hairy woodpeckers, blue jay…and only one junco and one house sparrow.
Good news, BBG!
My bird chase today had what is becoming all too predictable for me. The bird, which has been coming to the feeder throughout the mornings, had been there once….about 20-30 minutes before I got there. Only a couple people were there early enough. I stood watch for over three hours…no luck. It’s still fun to run into birding friends and meet new ones. One really interesting aspect to this one was the host family. The family is Mennonite. The wife and her sister are both very avid birdwatchers. In fact, we were all offered a copy of the current “Feathers and Friends” magazine published by the Mennonite/Amish birding community! Who knew?
If it comes around consistently again and I have a nice day next week, I may skip my morning coffee and head right up the road after getting dressed. Sigh.
That bird was there this morning. Hoping it makes a nice appearance for me tomorrow, I’m ready to rock and roll!
I knew someone must be lurking… I’m usually not lucky lime that. Hope this is a good omen for my bird chase tomorrow. We are delaying our fat tire trip to the refuge for a day so I can go chase birds.
:ftp: I’m cheep!
:ltp: for a cheep cheep
Seems to have stopped here.
I’m hoping tomorrow to be adding another bird to my Life List. A family in Clark County has a cool bird visiting their feeders and they have given permission for visitors. It’s a finch of the high Arctic and I think the Bering Straits. Though the camera does have electronics, I could enjoy this one (probably better!) without it.
How completely frustrating for him! He’s a hard worker at these events and I can see how something like this could happen. That’s a lot of stress for him to have carried those months. I’m so sorry this happened to him.
Trekkin’ shoveled maybe an inch and a half. Light snow still falling.
That’s just lousy, jar!
If the clouds ever lift around here, I hope to see the planetary alignment.
If we get some of the promised snow, we hope to take the fatties up to the wildlife refuge, maybe on Tuesday. While at the Chili Slam yesterday, we picked up a flyer from the guys who sold us the bikes about a fat tire loop there. Course, binoculars will be strapped around my neck, which could slow things down.
On a sad note, it sounds as if the Ivory Gull I kept waffling on the drive to Duluth to see is not long for the world. No one knows exactly what’s going on, but it’s struggling. Wonder if it got nipped by a bird of prey? People who saw it yesterday saw a healthy bird. It’s tough being a wild animal.
