Happy New Year! We took part in the First Hike at Perrot State Park. We learned something that was a bit troubling to us; the state parks, other than 5 big ones, aren’t funded from the general fund budget anymore. They get partial proceeds from the sale of the stickers, camping fees and firewood sales. Perrot has two full time employees who split their time between Perrot and Merrick and the Buffalo River and Great River State Trails. The parks have been contracting with loggers for timber sales, and depend a lot on volunteers to do a lot of the work.
Yeah, last I looked it was still snowing here as well. Trekkin’ did some shoveling earlier just to keep the entries reasonable.
We’ve gone from just snow on the ridgetops and north faces of the bluffs to snowglobe snowfall and the ground is now covered white again. We got out earlier to look for a cache, since there’s been too much sitting lately. Hopefully things settle down tomorrow and Wednesday….hoping to do the sunset hike at the winery tomorrow and First Hike on Wednesday at Perrot. It would be so awesome to add just one more bird for the year list, but I think last Thursday’s was my last one.
So my brother and I had a great time mixing it up with the Klingons last night. Hilarious production! And now I’m kind of stuck here due to the State Patrol advising no travel.
I have a photo of us hamming with the cast, but I don’t know how to add it here.
We’re going to break out the fat bikes tonight. Not much snow here, but then again, that keeps the snowmobiles off the bike trail. So…we’ll be night riders!
No idea what is triggering this.
Really? With what’s been happening of late? I was involved in a couple of active shooter drills….just drills…shortly before retiring and not only were the kids anxious during the drill, I was too.
I don’t often make a “proud mom” post anywhere, but this one made us especially proud. Our long-haired hippie son (as viewed by many in this small town conservative community) lost a long-time (like since 6th grade) good friend unexpectedly last week. He was only 30 and had an apparent heart attack. Those of us who were connected to him are still kind of in shock, but Taylor is also a small business owner. He is creating a memorial patch, with all sales going to Dan’s family. Not profits….sales. Dan was the center for the football team that won state their senior year, so already many of his old teammates have placed their orders.
He’s a good kid, man-bun, baggy sweats and all. (This is Pooh’s Pal’s dad, btw).
I guess the fact that we’ll be exploring things like the Natchez Trace. St. Catherines NWR and maybe getting a couple of state’s oldest might make up for things. I can make chili at our apartment when we get home and they do have breweries down there. 😉
Sigh. The chili feed….in a craft brewery, not far from home.
Except we aren’t home that month, but about 900 miles downriver.
Sigh.
We haven’t been able to make either event the past few years for various reasons. Sometimes we camp, sometimes we don’t. At both of them. We are hardy camping stock, however, since the bulk of our camping is primitive and often 1750s period correct….sometimes in winter under a heavy snowfall.
So we probably aren’t the best people to ask. [;)]
Different topic….I have one more holiday card to make. I have the photo for it, but this is for someone who has SAD and hates the holidays, which increase his depression. What in the world can I write as a greeting in that card? I don’t want to pretend that saying “Merry Christmas buck up” will acknowledge his mood. His feelings are real and legitimate and to pretend otherwise isn’t helpful. TIA
Is it a holiday photo? Does it need to be a holiday card? Maybe a neutral photo and a nonholiday message would be more appropriate, just something informative for keeping in touch.?
I made the card with a non-holiday photo and it isn’t very Christmas-y of a design. My others actually weren’t, either. I think I ended up with a bit of a pun and more of an encouragement that we’re here sort of thing. I have read so many things of late about not denying the darkness in our lives, but accepting it and allowing it to help us work through whatever we might need. I remember a saying somewhere and I cannot for the life of me come up with the exact words, but family said something like “into every life some darkness will come.” I’m in danger of going on and on here, but our culture is so fixated on “happy, happy” and “shop, shop,” that I can see how someone who suffers depression anyway can be completely overwhelmed by it all. It gets to me and I’m fairly optimistic in my outlook on life.

Seems to me like these Adventure Labs are essentially the same as Wherigo?
The Adventure Labs seem to be like that, or maybe multis that allow a “find” for each stage, which I wasn’t crazy to see. Trekkin’ did the local one, which was a repeat of a former intercache (which is also kind of what they’re like, I guess). No expert, since we’ve only done one and haven’t sought them out.
For the souvenir, you have to have finds on “six caching outings.” In other words, cache or attend an event on six different days during the time frame of this. We’ve skipped a lot of souvenirs this past year, but since we’ve been mostly vacation cachers, we have stuff close by that we can try to use for this promotion. Honestly, I feel like they’ve kind of gone overboard with those things….just my opinion.
We haven’t worried too much about any of the souvenirs this past year….but we also haven’t worried too much about caching. So that means there are some things close to home we can get, though I’m never fond of souvenirs that more or less “encourage” us to make repeated trips to La Crosse or Holmen when one trip would do. Oh well! We’re 1/3 of the way to this one. Good luck…I know you’ve got way more snow there. You do know you’ve also had Snowy Owls on the breakwater, right? We don’t have any of those around here yet.
We would not have bought new laptops except for this lack of support for Windows 7 coming. We didn’t upgrade to 10 because everyone we knew who did had major headaches. Our laptops are almost 10 years old and we’d have kept on with them if not for this switch.
Most of my friends who earn money with photography use Lightroom. I’ve never looked at that myself. I also have a Canon program to use when and if I shoot in RAW, but that doesn’t happen too often. I haven’t tried to load that one onto the new ‘puter yet.
