Worthy of eventual emulation…. Kudos 😀

The location for events seems to be the subject of perennial debate. The complaints we hear from our far northern cousins are not new. JT did a geographic study a couple of years ago comparing the center of WGA population and the center of WGA sponsored activities. The activities seemed to be rather fairly distributed based on this. It has been the position of the WGA BOD that it is more fun to get out of town for these activities and has never had a problem taking the show to the road. A couple of hours to or from a site has never been a problem, three hours is OK, but 4 or 5 starts to drain our resources. And that is just for setting-up such an event. a 4-5 hour drive for a family with small children can be a real test if we are talking about a week-end event. I realize that our far northern cousins have families with small children as well. That is why we need to consider the greater good for our efforts. Is it better to disappoint a dozen cachers or a hundred cachers?

We who are trapped in an urban existence sincerely envy those who might be able to survive in our north woods. But we also realize that your idyllic environment means that you will have to accept a longer commute to participate in the activities of the masses. How far would you have to drive to go to a rock concert or to the opera?

My personal feeling is that I would like to go back to Hartman Creek. That seemed to be one of the most central locations we have visited. No matter where we go for these events, we must consider the limitations of the staff that will support the effort and the wishes of the greatest number of our members. ~tb

The jeeps were released in August and a score of them arrived at the WGA picnic. While Trudy & I were there, we did not see any of them. We have yet to see or touch a green jeep.

I believe that the jeep horders may be thinking along these lines:

The August goal is DISCOVERY, send a picture of me discovering a bunch of green jeeps.

The September goal is FREEDOM, tell the world that I have the freedom to keep these jeeps as long as I like.

The October goal is ADVENTURE, look at the adventure in dodging my fellow cachers on the trail to evade the issue of holding the jeeps too long.

The November goal is CAMARADERIE I am going to get a picture of me and all the friends I have made by holding these jeeps. Look how much film I have saved.

The December goal is HERITAGE, won’t my children and grandchildren be proud of me for the way I took the fun out of the game for dozens on my fellow geocachers.

In January it will be too late to enter the contest anyway.

In Febrauary their tempers will cool

In March everybody will have forgotten the jeeps

In April I will do my taxes

In May I can dump all these jeeps at the camp out.

The suggestions are very welcome. It shows great interest in these activities. But please be mindful of the fact that with few exceptions, the people who set these events up live within 100 miles of Milwaukee. Events in the other corner of the State can be very taxing on those who have been hosting them. Locations closer to the center of the State are certainly more reasonable.

We have been out caching every weekend – haven’t seen one yet.

Very cool idea. I can see a small drop down window with a thumbnail of cache data in the area (ID, Type, d/t) for 5-10 caches. But these are only dreams. It’s the digerati at gc.com that could make this sort of thing happen. 🙂

                    How about a man with 3? 4? … 8?

Go here http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?state_id=50 [lists all Wisconsin caches] then go to the last page on the listing. that will take you to the oldest in the state.

I just thought that I should point out that there is no rule that excludes past nominees from being resubmitted. Example: Feed the geese was not selected in September, it can be resubmitted in October if deemed appropriate. ~tb

                            Ray

We had hidden one cache that was selected for COTM – May 2003 -Diamond in the Rough (GCF72C). The cache was in the mix for a little over a year. This cache was archived for several reasons: (1) it was not available during July (GMO); (2) it became high maintenance, requiring weekly visits to replace WP1 since there were a number of cachers that became creative with replacing it; (3) damage to the hiding spot at WP1 and (4) dwindling finder interest.

What I find surprising is that I should have to justify archiving a cache two years after the fact. I guess I can understand the interest, but if a cacher decides to archive a Cache, that is his choice. No explanation is owed. The implication that archiving a cache is a disservice to the community is difficult to accept.

Look at it this way…. EVERY cache will eventually be archived. WHEN that occurs is up to the cache owner or the site administrators. I prefer to control the destiny of my own caches.

Trudy & I have met many, many cachers. Most were met at events, but it is more exciting to meet them on the trails. If I don’t know the cacher, I will hide my GPS and pretend to be a muggle… “Whatcha doin?” I once pulled that on a cacher that recognized me from the BOD photo; that didn’t get the reaction I expected. We once ran into Pharmteam on the trails, twice in one day. Meeting other cachers is the best part of the sport. they all seem to have a streak of mischief in their souls. ~tb
