for trouble free downloads, you can’t beat the Garmin products. Lowerance makes very good units, but they don’t have the popularity and support of the Garmin units among geocachers. My daughter uses a Magellan. ~tb

Expect to meet a bunch on kindred souls with big smiles and warm handshakes. Some give great hugs if you know them. All will regail you with the greatest of tales of their adventures, and lend an ear for yours. Some may offer to walk the trails with you and maybe show you a trick or two. Overall, a rather boring (not) deal. Come on out; you will look forward to the next event. ~tb

I’ve always been an outdoors person, but new to geocaching. I got my first unit just after christmas of 2005, and to date have 49 found its. I’m currently tring rid most of if not all of the caches in West Bend from my list. From there who knows.

I’m also new to the forum thing, I’m used to newsgroups, and I’am finding it time consuming looking through all the differnt subjects, both here and in groundspeak, so I don’t know how often I’ll be posting, this one probally being one of My longest, as I type using the 2 finger hunt and peck method.

Maybe we’ll meet on the hunt sometime or a local event.

Welcome aboard Dan. We all look forward to to meeting you on the trails. You are coming from an area that is home base to a few Icons in our R.A.S.H. (Recreation Activity Sport Hobby) and a few Caching Machines (Bushwacking Queen, Ecorangers, et al). So it is doubtful that you will ever be able to score all of the caches in Washington County. It is a beautiful area and the caches are very well done. You should enjoy caching in your own backyard. Trudy & I were there yesterday and plan on going back today. As for your typing, I am using the same method.. but, I seem to have some very fat fingers so mistakes are frequent. We can forgive you for that. As for the forums.. stay at home. You will find these forums much friendlier.

            Keep on Caching ~T&tb

Here are a couple of Bookmark lists that were put together to highlight caches:

After some thought on the subject, I think that Marc’s idea at the start of this thread has some merit. I don’t favor distinction by region or cache type. JMHO.

I think we will be seeing some shift in the activity toward more remote caches. SE Wisconsin has a growing number of micro caches that are going to fuel this change. Micros are easy to hide and maintain and they are less likely to be muggled. But, they can be more difficult to find especially for children. The lack of swag makes them boring for children. In time, family groups will draw their attention on day trips to get the kids away from the urban scene. Keep placing caches with swag, trading even or up, writing great cache descriptions and “found it ” logs and they will come. So will the blue ribbons.

                            Welcome aboard Jim,

These are very good questions to ask before purchasing a GPSr.

How critical is mapping capability for a GPS receiver?
it is not crical at all. but this is one feature we have really enjoyed having. We found our first caches with a Garmin 12 [no maps] and switched to a Garmin Map76 after a couple of years. While the maps are rapidly dated and lack the detail of a good street atlas, whe found them very helpful in navigating to the cache. It really helps to know when a round-about approach is required because there are no roads between here and there. Without the maps, you may find yourself bushwacking for several hundred yards while there may be a road right on the other side of the cache.

Similarly, how critical is an electronic compass? Logically, it seems like a regular compass in hand with GPSr is a good way to save some $$.
We briefly used a hand held electronic compass and found the regular compass is a lot more convienient and less expensive. a regular compass does not consume battery power and does not require recalibration when batteries are changed. You can find some very nice hand held compasses that cost a lot less than the bump in GPSr price for this added electronic feature.

We have experienced a mix with our caches. We have tried to stuff our caches full of individually bagged (ziplock) items with the Idea that this is for the kids. Few stash items are really of any interest to us. Some of the caches have done rather well and some have not. Ghost Train Station 5 is full if the kids want to visit. Walk the trail from #3 the kids will love walking across the freeway on the old RR bridge. I guess the thought we have is that when we put it out, we really don’t expect anything in return. We routinely TNLNSL and hope that the little ones will find some treasure when they visit. ~T&tb

Of course I don’t know all the legal stuff behind it but if snowmobile clubs can do that with boats and stuff like that why not the tools of our trade.

This may be doable. There may be some strings attached; I believe each raffle must be licensed by the State (we would need permission). I recall seeing a license number on raffle tickets I bought. We may need to wait until our non-profit status is granted.

Maybe some of our Optimists or Lions could provide more insight.
