The question of virtuals got me to thinking. I checked the virtuals Trudy & I have logged and realized that we couldn’t remember over half of these. Some of the most memorable we because they were lame. Some could be scored without stopping the car, some offered worthless trivia. Then on the other hand we have found some virtuals that are very interesting and we are pleased that we took the time to visit these. “Moscow, we have a problem”, “The Ephraim wetlands preserve”, “The chapel dedicated to St. Joan of Arc”, “A Banner Day”, “Lime Kiln Adventure #1”, “Old Testament Name Buried in Calvary”, “In Memory of Bob”, “The beginnings of a Tradition”, “Cache in Beloit”, and “Temptations” all fit this latter group. My personal opinion is that it would be a shame to archive these.
I would suggest that when a marker is selected at the roadside or in a cemetary, it needs to be of great enough significance to a wide variety of people to pass the test. Please don’t take me to your uncle Fred’s grave and expect me to get excited about it. If you offer me a virtual, am I going to remember it a year from now? Or, will it be more fodder for the argument supporting the virtual moratorium? If you suspect that your virtual is only of interest to pad a cacher’s count then don’t place it or if you have placed it, archive it now and save me some gas.
~tbWe got a chance to use the Map60 on the trails today and can’t believe how bright the display is in daylight. I took us to the caches effortlessly. We are not regretting this investment.
I just added it to my “Favorites list” ~ thanks Ken.
tbSteve,
Congratulations… I think you are going to like the unit. Have you given it a name yet? Howie is taken. We are thinking of calling ours Bonnie and Clyde as Shrek & Fiona are taken also. Were you able to load the data via USB or Serial Port? I loaded Topo through the SP , and it took over an hour to load the same maps you mention. Since the Maps will be stored semi-permanently, this isn’t a problem but I would like to start using the USB for WP downloads. Easy GPS just isn’t working over my USB connection. I am not sure if it is a software issue or my laptop since both gps units are behaving the same.

Some of the features that are immediately impressive are the increased capacities for maps and for user waypoints (56M for maps and 1000 WP); The color graphics are very pleasing; Large numerals are very easy to read; and it seems to hold a satelite lock much better than my Map76. I have also been able to get a satelite lock indoors with it. One feature that surprised me is that the find function allows me to choose a waypoint or geocache (or cities, exits, found caches, POIs, etc) rather than handling them all alike. It includes an alarm clock, Calendar, Calculator and games. There is an improved routine for manual entry of WPs that is a God-send. The back of the unit has the standard 4-pin Garmin connector, USB and external antenna connectors so it is compatable with our other toys.
The display isn’t as vivid as I would like, unless I use the backlight. It is physically the size of the Garmin12 display which is smaller than the 76 and larger than the eTrex. This might make the map76 preferable for Automotive navigation.
Battery life is a very impressive 30 hours, I am told. I havn’t tried to measure it. and there is a battery guage on the top of every page.
I couldn’t justify the 60CS over the 60C, for our use. We are not experts yet (may never be) but this unit seems well worth the price.
~tbPouring over the Op manual to dig out every crumb of information to make us experts on the operation of this gem and what should we discover?
A screen image on page 15 names Wellsville, Trudy’s hometown.
Go figure… Was this unit custom built for T&tb?
Was it a Map60?
Sidnaw, Qwerty-too, Levigirls, Pine Queen We are all proud of you and hope that this is just the beginning of four long geocacheing careers. Kudos, accolades and great thunderous applause.
Bump!
This is one of the more difficult choices I have faced lately…. I would like to vote for all 6 candidates. But, I guess that’s not allowed.
~tbYea, that goes for us too. Except this wasn’t our first event, just our best!

I’m sure REI would be willing to host it. They have clinics every Tuesday night. Let me know and I can get you the contact info.
We were at REI last night and they are interested… Contact Jesse Knox
Caimeg,
Welcome back…
T&tbJT’s reference is excellent. I got the same info on a leaflet provided by Milwaukee Map Service years ago. (They were still on North Ave then).

This is already in the discussion circles. Did you catch the beasts New Year’s prediction on this?
Unless you have had pets and enjoyed the incredible bonding that can exist between a human and a furry family friend, it is very difficult to understand that the grief for a lost pet can easily be as intense as that for a lost brother or sister. It must have been difficult for you to bring these emotions to the boards. Then too, “grief shared is grief diminished.” We hope that you experience some relief and comfort from doing this and seeing how empathetic your friends here can be. At times like this, we are awakened to the fact that the pain you are feeling now is good in that if you felt no pain then you loss would have been of no consequence. This life, now gone would not have been so cherished. Let there be pain, let us share it with you so that when that pain does subside, you will be filled with the wonderful memories you have of your relationship.
