The admins at Groundspeak may be a better source for this information, but I would suggest that they are waiting for your check to clear [10 days-2 weeks]. If you used PayPal it should be quicker [1 week-10 days]. —- Just guessing. I don’t remember that it was exceptionally long. The account was active about the same time I began to question it.
Green Bay on the 4th, Minocqua on the 5th sounds interesting. I hope this doesn’t present a conflict for cachers. I think we should be able to make both, but some will have to choose one or the other.
On the numbers, or what to expect from our community: We have found that almost everyone who says they will be there, will. And, you can expect 20 to 30% more. It sounds like fun, bring it on!

61st is correct but since the last count we have added more than a dozen newbies to the Wisconsin geocachers rolls, so this would still be in the 92+ percentile. Kudos again g.b.teos.
Kudos Jeff! and Kudos to PharmTeam on being quicker on the draw than the beast!
Jeff became the 19th Wisconsin geocacher to reach the tripple centennial mark. He is now 3/4 of the way to his goal of 400 by the end of his first year [12/31]. With four months to go, he can actually slow down [or skip a month] and still meet that goal.quote:

Either way, a newbie couldn’t be in better hands.

That would be a nice round 60 of 780+ Wisconsin cachers have reached that level; less than 8%. MrWUM has a right to be very proud of this achievement.
Team LotsaCache has made a very good suggestion. Event caches will bring you in contact with other cachers. This will give you plenty of opportunity to ask every question you might have. There are regularly scheduled events in the Madison Area, The greater Milwaukee area, Greater Chicago area and others as well. Most of us oldtimers would be glad to take you along on a hunt or two.
Purchasing a GPS unit doesn’t have to be a major budgeting event. The Garmin eTrex (“Little Yellow”) is a very popular unit that costs about $100. If you can find an advertised special, take that ad to Gander Mountain. GM will take double the difference off their regular price. You might be able to pick up that unit for as little as $80-90. That unit should be good enough to get you through your first few hundred finds.
Take those scouts out with you, teach them CITO (Cache in, Trash out). Keep it Fun.
tbAs another cacher to cacher, I tried placing a series of caches [Havenwoods 1-5] and intended to continue the series until I realized that they lose their distinctiveness as the series grows. I had to stop and think about which was which. This was starting to hurt.
Now we try to make our caches as distinctively different as we can. It’s a lot easier to keep track of them mentally.
BTW, two of our more recent caches are at dams. One is a micro perhaps 100 feet away. The other is a clear rubbermaid container right beside the dam [oops]. Fortunately, the second doesn’t have a very threatening appearance.
At this point, each of our existing caches is very different from the others. It makes it a lot easier for Trudy & I to discuss them.
The three hundred finds are only part of the story. Yawningdog has also placed 25 caches, each of better than average quality and better than average challenge. They are great. The few that we have had the opportunity to seek are memorable to say the least. Place them on your todo list. This will round out your idea of what geocaching is all about.
In order for a radio receiver [such as your GPS] to work, it creates a high frequency signal that it processes internally. It is that lowpower signal that can interfere with other very sensitive electronic devices. With proper shielding between your GPS and that equipment, there is usually no problem. You did the right thing by asking before using the GPS.
This is a curious point. We havn’t placed a lot of caches, but we have found that about 15-20% of the logs that we see at our cache sites are never echoed on the web pages. That you should meet finders that have never logged either at the site or on the net, isn’t surprising. Some people will go out of their way to protect their privacy, even in activities as inocuous as ours. It is just their way of enjoying the sport.
One suggestion previously made is Hartman Creek State Park just outside of Waupaca.
Awe-struck ditto Ken’s message
tbThis is a very well written article; a real pleasure to read. Thanks for bringing it to us Ken.
Thank you Brian.
