Capitol Times is the only Madison paper I have been able to find here. I checked Broders, and Barnes & Noble without any luck. Has anyone else been able to come up with a copy? Cashew might you be able to find a link or electronic copy to post here?

Good news! We will see if we can find a copy of it here in Milwaukee.

You have a neighbor with a few very nice caches in place: Dragnfly http://www.geocaching.com/profile/default.asp?A=63060

You might try contacting her to see if she might want to meet with you over a cup of coffee to discuss caching.

You might drop Trudy & I a line and arrange for us to meet you over a cup of coffee to discuss caching.

You might stop in at our next Metro Milwaukee Geocachers Breakfast and Caching event and choose a mentor. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=73045

Or you might choose to sort through the dozens of suggestions I expect will be following this post and go at it on your own.

No matter which approach you choose, any caches you place will be welcomed by our community. If they are well done, we will let you know. If not, we will accept them anyway.

There is guidance here: http://wi-geocaching.com/hide.html or here: http://www.geocaching.com/hideseek/

              Keep on caching

You’re not stepping on my toes at all…
all are welcome at the breakfasts regardless of experience. and any of our seasoned veterans would be delighted to have a newbie at their side. We did lunch and four caches in the rain with a group of newbies today.

I can’t blame him for being one of the first to offer a college class in geocaching. Everyone’s got a right to try to make a buck.

I am in total agreement. Jim Sernovitz will only be doing what he normally does for a living. There is nothing wrong with this.

I believe I know his handle but I am not sure. If correct, he’s done over 100 caches, although nothing since March, hidden none but has done over 30 benchmarks.

This profile doesn’t fit anyone I know of.

As far as spending your money on the class Ray, why not take your Trudy out on the town instead. I’m sure you know enough about the sport to teach a class on your own.

Miata, I take your comment as a complement. I was trying to play the devil’s advocate… Would it be worth the investment if I had no finds at all?

The same story has been forwarded to me from another source:
                          http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/local/5992641.htm

My take on it was at first reactive. I felt that the sport was presented negatively and that may well have been the authors’ intention. But as an afterthought, how much credence do I want to give to an article that champions the criminalization of a family activity that has less impact than trail bikes in the forrests or even skateboards in a parking lot?

I am not sure that I know who Jim Sernovitz is. I don’t know the real names that go with every local cacher. I understand that he is a professional photographer, ornithologist and lecturer. But I know nothing of his geocaching credits; his finds, his placements.

As a student, I would be interested in my teachers’ credentials. Professional recognition or amateur achievement are essential to establishing the level of authority I expect my instructors to have. Will Mr. Sernovitz and his program be sanctioned or approved by the WGA or Groundspeak? Will it be worth my investment to enroll in his class?

We must be doing something wrong… we are missing a lot of details. We do a zip code search of an area we want to visit, then print the cache sheets [printer friendly version] and down-load the WP data to the GPS. Then I start the car and honk for Trudy to hurry-up.

Our first 300 caches were all done with a Garmin GPS12. We found that this is a good solid unit. L/L have been right on the money and rarely have we had any trouble with Satillite lock. It is a bit clunky, battery hungry and it does not float. But within 100 feet, it has been highly reliable.

We recently added a Garmin Map76 to our tool kit. This is a great navigational aid. Huge and vivid display, and has excellent map detail. We still don’t have a complete handle on all the features. It seems to have a highter order of precision than our GPS12, but isn’t as quick in close. Maybe that’s us and we will pick up speed in time.

To make both storys short, they are each great units and each has it’s strong points.
For ease in use, our granddaughter achieved an admirable level of proficiency with a yellow Garmin eTrex in a few hours.
