Yeah, I know. But we do have MaryAnn’s cookbook and there are several coconut cream pie recipes in it. Perhaps the slice of pie is within reach.

Sitting around the campfire next to the shore with new and old friends, drinking Blatz, watching a Pink Floyd concert on a wide-screen TV in surround sound, with everyone stirring coconuts to supply the power, then capping the evening off with a slice of coconut cream pie.
Regarding cache placement violations: Here is a link to the WDNR’s description of the
Rock Island Woods State Natural Area and a pdf map showing the boundaries. As we make our plans for this years Getaway, it might be wise to review the logs of the ill-fatedKeepers Cache GC7A8D

Much of Rock Island is State Natural Area which is closed to caching, so there isn’t a lot of room for temporaries. I wasn’t suggesting that we try to pepper the remaining area with temps, but rather that a few quality caches be set out. I wouldn’t want the Getaway to metamorphose into another frenzied event with everyone bustling about trying to find forty to sixty caches. My personal opinion would be five temps maximum, even that might be too many.
On the other hand, this is a caching event, so we should have some caches. Otherwise we may be told that our event should be listed on beertown.org rather than geocaching.com!
I don’t log a find for every cache at an event either. My thoughts regarding a list of island highlights with coordinates weren’t intended to ring up a bunch of cache find’s in the logs, but instead to serve as a guidebook to newcomers.
Finally, 2006 is the perfect year to accomplish the secret goal.

Not to be forgotten when talking of the tastings, last years event included a cheese tasting concurrent with the beer tasting… Remember that very young white cheddar?

Both group sites are currently available, but we probably need to secure a reservation prior to the March cache publication window.

Great pictures, Mr. Cathunter, as usual.
Everyone should check out his link above.

I’m going to answer the questions posed over the last few days in one log.
No beer fund has been set up yet. The tasting proved quite popular at last year’s event. We also learned that cachers are quite adventurous in trying real beer. We’ll be bringing a much wider selection this year. And plenty of Blatz.
We feel that a group site is a very good idea. Last year our group was spread out all over the island. The only time we really all got together was Saturday’s cookout and tasting. Having a group site will afford us a private headquarters area where we can store group related stuff and arrange hikes and other activities. While we lean towards getting our own site, we haven’t decided for sure yet, we may stay with the group.
I suggested earlier that a modest event fee be asked to cover some of the costs. Just having a campfire at the group would save everyone money as they wouldn’t need to have their own fire burning all evening. If we had twenty people attend at five dollars per adult and half of them stayed at the group site and were charged an extra five dollars for camping, we’d have two hundred dollars. That would cover the cost of the site with thirty bucks to spare for firewood.
Of course, if we had forty people attend, we’d have way too much cash. In this event, we could refund the excess amongst us, donate it to Friends of Rock Island (they restored the lighthouse), or appoint a treasurer to hold it to finance future getaways. Any overage would only amount to a few dollars per person, so we shouldn’t need to wrestle over the decision. And should we come out short, we’ll just have to put out a donations can.
litleflrt’s questions:
Event caches are by rule open to all cachers; they won’t be approved for publication otherwise. So, yes, everyone is welcome to attend, and you’ll be glad you did; Rock Island is a unique place and it’s a great event.
The date is tentatively set for June 23, 24, 25 (the weekend AFTER Father’s Day and the weekend BEFORE the July 4th weekend).
Rock Islands sites are generally wooded with sparse grass if any. Most are well drained and don’t get real muddy. The exceptions are the group sites, which are grass covered. There is a lot of information about what to expect on Rock Island on the previous year’s cage page logs:
Rock Island Getaway 2005TS
Now that it seems like the event is going ahead, I have some thoughts on the event caches.
The cache race was an entertaining group activity and I hope that DCexplorer sets up another. It might be nice to have a few more caches placed for hunting while hiking the island over the course of the weekend. Perhaps some cachers that have visited the island before could bring a cache or two for temporary placement and set them out soon after arrival. We could then compile a master list at the group site for entry into GPSrs. In this way, everyone would have a few new caches to seek and it would take some of the workload off of DCexplorer.
In addition to actual caches, a list of some of the island’s highlights could provided for newcomers, sort of like virtual caches.
A while back, I built a switch box for loading coordinates to and from GPSrs and a laptop at event caches. If deemed useful, I could bring it along to the event.

Like Cathunter, we’ll probably get our own site. If Patriot1 and the Geopoo can make it, they’ll probably stay with us. We are willing to put up a little venture capitol to get things started reserving the group site anyway. We were thinking fifty bucks would be affordable for us. Perhaps a few other cachers that are planning to attend could send in an estimated amount for their camping, and we should be able to raise the needed amount for the reservation.
We could send the money via PayPal, but it only takes a day to mail a check over to Sturgeon Bay and that would save PayPal fees.

After having spoke with my wife, it seems that Father’s Day weekend would be easier for her to take off work as she already has scheduled to be off around the Fourth of July, but we’ll try to attend whatever weekend is decided upon.

You are correct, it is difficult to find the specific pet rules for Rock Island. You almost have to go through the reservation process to get to them. Here’s the quote from ReserveAmerica: “NO pets allowed on campsites #1 – 19, or on remote sites “A – E”
Conversely, pets are allowed on campsites #20-35 and on the group sites.

I am a late nighter too (and have developed a quieter means for opening pop tops!)
Bec
Rock Island is decidedly more crowded during the peak season, but the people that go there (particularly the campers) are special. They tend to be adventurers seeking the peaceful times to be had on the island, not the tourist types to be found on the mainland of Door County.
I too have developed a quiet technique to open cans. Perhaps a silent can opening competition could be held one evening…
I’m impressed at how many of us got into this forum so quickly. I’m guessing those participating in this discussion were amongst the six accounts that still had the cache page on their watchlist. There may a few cachers from the past event who attended or expressed interest but have since removed it from their watchlist. It might be a good idea to e-mail those individuals inviting them to join in on this discussion. DCexplorer, do you care to do this, or should I?
BTW I noticed that the apprehensions that some cachers had about “primitive camping” on Rock Island have been supplanted by enthusiasm.
