This is a VER common practice in Germany. I’ve seen this come up in a furum before. There are cachers in Germany with hundreds, if not thousands of virtual finds. It’s their way of playing the game.

What’s the purpose of the temp caches? If you’re going to the trouble of hiding caches, why not make them permanent?

… again, we need to remember not to take this sport to seriously.

I post DNF’s for anything I physically hunted but did not find. I do this because as a cache placer, I know first hand how important it is to receive those DNF’s. Not to mention, some of the most entertaining logs I receive are DNF’s.

    which do you like

I think the important question here is; which do you like?

Hide caches you like to hide/find. That’s the simple answer, and maybe the best. The reason I say this is because you are not going to please all the cachers all the time. I know this first hand.

I have caches of all types, sizes and placements, and I get fan mail and hate mail for them all, even the easy ones. Some people don’t like hides made of nuts and bolts that appear to be original to machinery, some do. Some people don’t like walking a half mile over rocks to find an ammo can, some do. Some people don’t like having to use a boat to get to a cache, and some do. There are even people who will bash individuals (GONIL Forums) because you put a pill bottle in a tree crotch or a magnetic under a park bench.

If all caches were perfect for everyone, there would then be someone still to complain that all caches were the same.

Plant the cache styles and types that you like to find/hide, and make yourself happy. It will be worth it in the end.

Matt, my suggestion is to stay away from Rheem. I can’t say for sure what the furnaces they make are like, but if they are anything like the water heaters they make, you don’t want one.

I’ve installed Rheem water heaters exclusively for 5 years now. In the last three months, I’ve had to replace 4 of those already, due to the tank splitting, or electronics failing.

    Just a thought!

Now I wish I could remember the name of the company that is selling this new furnace I’ve been hearing about on the radio. It lets you switch between natural gas or electricity for heating. You use whichever is cheaper in your area at the time. It’s supposed to be one of the most efficient units on the market as well. I’ll try and do a bit of research today and see if I can come up with a name.

If the O-ring disappears, consider doubling over a rubber band a few times in the place where the O-ring was. This makes for a great watertight seal. It works great for pill bottles too.

I gotta say that I felt really odd while hunting a cache in Chicago. At the time I had no idea it would be on a mailbox, but that is where I found it. We only had to search for a minute or two to locate it, but in that time, we got a lot of funny looks, and even got the attention of the security guards in a nearby building although when they came out, they gave us a quick glance and walked right by. The cache was Batcolumn. It was our first, and our last mailbox cache.

These are federal property, so I would guess hiding caches on them would not be permitted any longer. But are old ones grandfathered?

A few times we have been frustrated that a cache seems to be unfound, but when you find it, it already has been signed. I am not just talking about 15 minutes, but it was found a few hours ago.

Is there a general rule about how soon after you are a FTF that you should log your find?

IMHO, I think a few to several hours is completely acceptable. We cannot expect people to go running home to log their finds so that you are not personally inconvenienced can we? Even if it’s the whole day, I think it’s OK. Many people set out in the early AM to cache, and don’t return until the evening. I rarely get the time for this, but it has happened.

Ask yourself this question. Would you have done the cache anyway, even if the FTF was not available? I think so. Hey, it’s just an FTF, right?

It is so difficult to pick just one. I have so many favorites, for so many reasons, whether it’s favorite view/location, clever hide, best container or best puzzle. So, I’ll pick one of each. 😉

The cache with the best container is Riddler’s Compass, because of the unique locking mechanism, and the container I hand made for it.

My best puzzle cache is without a doubt Signs just because of the difficulty folks are having solving this one.

My favorite clever hide is most definitely the container I hand made for For Those About To Rock even though it’s not near the most difficult in the series to find.

And lastly, the cache with the best location or favorite view is by far Match Head. If I absolutely had to pick a single favorite, it would be this one. It’s seen so many milestones, and won the COTY last year, and most importantly, it has consistently provided me with the best logs of any of our caches.

I just hope you like these as much as I do!

You can just click this link which will take you to Adobe Flashplayer web-site. It will let you know if you have the most recent version. If you don’t, just click update or download. Takes only a few seconds with high-speed ISP.

I had the same issue last week. I updated my flashplayer, and everything worked just fine.
