Not sure if it makes a difference, but I use EasyGPS to download the GPX, not GSAK.

Groundspeak has added a new undocumented feature for owners of multi and mystery caches. If you download a gpx of your own cache, the hidden waypoints are now included in the file. I don’t know how many people ever download gpx files of their own caches, but at least one person does, who was a little surprised to see the answer to his puzzle in his download file. Please rest assured that this only happens if you are the owner of the cache. Other people downloading the gpx will NOT receive the hidden coordinates.

I would be that one person, and yes, when I downloaded the GPX file for Signs I panicked!

All is well though. When you contacted me and explained it all, I was relieved.

Have you defragmented your hard drive? The drive gets fragmented easily and that will always cause application and files to open slowly. The system has to go out and find all the pieces of the application before it opens. Start with a system defrag and see if the response time increases. I also back up my data, format the drive and reload my system about every two years just to clean up all the applications that I have tried and removed. They always leave entries in the system registry. You can also run msconfig from the run line and edit the start-up programs to keep any unwanted applications from executing at start-up and running in the back ground. I agree 4 years is about the life of a PC, but the life can be extended with a little maintenance. If you are not sure how to defrag you system or edit the start-up menu, let me know.

Yup, tried that too. I believe I have the problem solved, though the damage may be done.

I got a laptop a few months back, and I only got it for back-up storage, so it dosen’t get used much. I placed my laptop on the side of my computer tower, so it was lclose-by whenever I would need it. Turns out, the laptop has been covering the intake for the towers fan. Wonder how hot the processors been getting?

Personally, I have no problem giving out hint’s to my caches, as long as the cacher asking for the hint has at least put in some time and effort into the find/puzzle before they ask. In most cases I respond first by asking how good of a hint they are looking for, because there is nothing worse than wanting a tiny nudge, and winding up with a total spoiler.

As for other peoples caches, that is different. I generally try to understand what the cache owner would most likely tell the cacher, and respond in that manner. When in doubt, I’ll give a vague hint.

Because of the nature of many of our cache-hiders in extreme SE Wisconsin, we have come up with a phone-a-friend network down here. It started life small, just exchanging numbers on the trails over the last year, but recently The CinnemaBoxers came up with the idea of starting a public yet private phone list.

Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s not like we sit on the phone getting walked through caches, it’s just an emergency thing, and that’s all it should ever be.

There are some caches where the challenge isn’t spotting the container, but rather retrieving the logbook.

    Especially in this case.

I also have caches that require you to “find” the logbook. In fact, my whole Riddler series is this way. Every cache is a puzzle you must solve, if you want to even get to the log. Simply finding the container on any of these caches, is not good enough to claim the find. I’ve had to delete a few logs on this series of caches, and none of those cachers have ever complained. Sort of like admitting guilt I suppose.

When i was field guy, we had a law firm we put on brand new p1’s off of the 286’s they had.. you’d think they just bought a new ferrari.

Not 3 months later they said the computers were slow. We benchmarked them and a reloaded one and proved absolutely no difference in speed. They had just gotten used to them.

I wish it were that simple. Sometimes it takes MS Word a good 20 seconds to open when it’s the only thing running, but most of the time it takes 8-10 seconds. When I got this computer, it was almost instant. Windows media, takes a good 15 seconds to load, and Google earth, well that one takes forever. All used to open without hesitation.

When I open windows explorer. a little flashlight gif pops up now while it searches the drive. Sometimes takes as much as 25 seconds before anything appears.

I should probably add here that this all started happening at the same time, it didn’t come on slow. It was like the flip of a switch. I’ve run Norton several times, also ran my spyware, and nothing has changed.

Here’s another thing. A month ago whan I ran Norton, it would scan for about 25 minutes on a full scan, and say that it scanned maybe 120,000 files. Now, it takes about 5 hours and says it scanned nearly 300,000 files. I’ve looked through my C drive, and it’s not any more full that it used to be. Any ideas there???

Please know this , whatever we are able to take over for you, will be there for you when you are able to get back to caching. The cache owner will still read The Lil Otter, as they still belong to you and always will. We’ll just “cachesit” them for as long as you need.

    Get well S O O N ! ! !

I’m in for a 1500. A 2000 would have been nice but the 2.0 MP camera just isn’t enough for the price.

Just the one I got last month, and I still have not placed it. It will be making it’s debut this weekend in my cache The Rooten Staircase as soon as I can get out to replace it. Yeah, it was muggled. It had a coin in it too. I’m starting to wonder if the cache was taken because of the coin.

We’ve only had the Magellan Meridian Color so far, and I see no reason to change to a new one. This GPS does everything we need it to and more. Sure, it’s a little large, and the color screen is smaller than the new ones, and the graphics aren’t quite as nice…

Wait, maybe I do need a new one. The New Magellan Explorer 600 sure looks nice!

    IMHO

The reason for so many types of caches, and so many different types of containers, is simply because every cacher has his/her own preferences, and will hide/find caches of those types.

If there is a style you don’t like, don’t look. Not everyone is going to like every cache. This I think reflects the sentiments of this topics author, and mine as well. You all know what types of caches I like to hide, small, large, up a tree, puzzles, a half mile over the rocks, and even the occasional pill bottle lying on the ground in a park with nothing to cammo it. These are the types I like to find as well. Every kind. Although the pill bottle in the crotch of a tree (not yours Rog) can get real boring, real fast.
