There are a few caches on Madeline Island, plus a handful in Washburn, Bayfield, and further north to Little Sand Bay… Most aren’t difficult to get to, even with snow.
In fact, at the end of the month, i’ll be placing 2 more caches in the Mellen area when i go up for the Run on Water in Bayfield… it’s a 5 mile “road” race on the ice from Bayfield to Madeline Island and backfor the most part i have everything in one spot. i have a cinchpack that holds baggies, pens, and small containers, plus my swag or TBs… all of which stays on the back seat of my truck. the bigger containers are in the bed. i also have a zippered folder/binder that has a few pockets for my stickers and maps and also holds a legal pad. there’s also a calculator built into it for any simple field solves.
my cell phone is a palm centro, so i have access to phone a friend and cachemate all in one.

Magellan Triton 500 in hand
Magellan RoadMate 760 in the trucki did the cache Mallalieu Canoe in Hudson, WI on November 15th…
was too impatient to wait for the ice to freeze over and just walk out, especially since it had double points at the time. recruited the help of my future father-in-law, got some kayaks, and paddled out. probably not the smartest move considering the temp (37) and wind that day (12-15 mph), but he didn’t complain. it was definitely the most challenging, and also my favorite because of it.i remember a weatherman from duluth quite a few years ago (well, mid 90’s i guess) while i was still in high school doing the water thing, and also using a banana as a hammer.
he was sitting in the news van with a bunch of bananas, peeled one down and took a bite to show they were soft… then grabbed another one, got out of the van, walked around to the back bumper where he had a piece of wood with a small nail started, then used the banana to finish it off.temps in northern wi and mn were between -35 and -40 and we only had school one day that week due to the cold. the following week was 2 hour late starts because we were almost out of weather days.
it’s a tie… one in AZ, and one in WI.

before i left AZ last year, i wanted to place a cache on a peak nearby that was a prominent feature on the skyline outside of town… but i was mean about it… no hints, clues, or parking. the cache is approx. 1.5 miles from the nearest parking location, but nearly 1500 feet up, and the climb is not pleasant especially in the AZ heat (no trail either).GC141TC
In WI, it’s another climb, located outside of Mellen. It’s approx. 3 miles from Mellen High School. I used to run to the top for cross country practice 2-3 times a year. The trail to the top brings you through abandoned foundations and buildings from the ore mining operation. There are also lookouts that give great views of Mellen and the Penokee Mountain range.my license plate is “uws22” and i have a university plate on it, so it has the yellowjacket logo as well 😀 plus the tb decal

amazing what you can download on torrents now…
depends on the palm… i found a patch for my old one and it worked just fine… vista will also hotsync with my Palm Centro phone to load cachemate, no patch needed.
i am… 8)
welcome to the forums… if you ever want a caching partner, just let me know… and watch for a few new caches in the area 😉
HWY 52 looks promising. just scanning the maps alone show 6 close by in iowa, and 4 in minnesota…
i have a really busy weekend starting tomorrow, but come monday i can compile a list of EC’s and others along the trip. between the two of us i’m sure we’ll have more than enough.it may help if a specific date. October 5th (sunday) is the first weekend date i have available. hopefully that one could work?
i am definitely willing to participate. not sure about providing a fuel efficient vehicle, since i have a Ford Explorer Sport Trac, but i am still definitely willing to drive, and would be willing to foot the extra cost for gas if it comes down to that.
copper falls state park is a great place to start… it’s just outside of mellen, and there are some great trails in the park (along with a few caches). there are numerous caches in the chequamegon nat’l forest, plus a few more waterfalls only a few miles outside the park (all with caches too).
for a quick search type in 54546 for the zip.Brian
