here you go…
after the typhoon
wall of fire
after the mud and barbed wire
07/26/2011 at 10:49 pm in reply to: 2011 WGA Fall Picnic – Brunet Island State Park – Committee #1949090factually it’s wrong to say they haven’t been in the northern half… but only 30 minutes from the center line? that means I’m still only halfway home. I also checked the math from Madison to Cornell and then Madison to Mellen, and it’s only 40 more minutes to get to Copper Falls… it helps traveling straight north.
here’s some quick info on Yellowstone Lake:
The park has 128 family campsites, five group sites, nine picnic areas, a reserveable shelter building, a swimming beach, two boat landings, and a canoe launch.
Kegonsa:
96-unit family campground
Six group campsites
Swimming beach
Boat Launch
Two reservable picnic shelters
Pet swim area
Picnic areas07/26/2011 at 10:00 pm in reply to: 2011 WGA Fall Picnic – Brunet Island State Park – Committee #1949088my suggestion would be to explore a bit more in the farther quadrants. Wausau is the geographical halfway point of the state (approx), yet we still haven’t had an event beyond that.
We have also had 5 parks that have hosted MULTIPLE WGA events, either the Campout or the Picnic. Hartman Creek has hosted 3!
(not counting CITO or other WGA sponsored events that aren’t intended to rotate). We have “northwest events” that aren’t even in the northern half of the state. I have spoken to the Park Superintendent at Copper Falls and he would love to host an event in the park. I’m sure Pattison or Amnicon could also handle it.
I also look at southern events and see places we keep going to over and over. Has anyone considered Yellowstone Lake? Lake Kegonsa?

Brian, you slacker. Instead of doing the Minnesota race, you should have done this one…Tough Mudder Some of my workout buddies did this over the weekend. They said it was more difficult that running a marathon.
a few of my friends were doing WD, which is why I chose that one. I may do tough mudder next year, but will depend on my training schedule for a marathon I hope to do in summer or fall. I’ve been contemplating a triathlon, but that would require me doing more than just a doggy paddle.
final results are now posted… I was 705th of 8883 overall (top 8%) and 153 of 1119 (top 14%) for my age group. hopefully pics are up soon.
figured I should report back for those considering it…
Had an absolute blast. course was the toughest I’ve done ( including cross country courses on ski hills). there were a total of 4 ski runs that you ended going straight up. the obstacles weren’t too bad. if you rush you get yourself in trouble… if you take your time it isn’t a problem.
I finished in 33 minutes. the fastest time of the day was 22 minutes. I checked the results before I left the grounds, and of the two waves (900 runners) I was 111 overall. Didn’t bring a camera because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to stow it anywhere, but when I do the race in September, I’ll definitely have it with. only 55 days or so left until the next one!
i’ve spotted bears twice while up north specifically caching. once placing a cache, once finding (of course plenty of other times hunting and riding and whatnot). neither were that close up, but since I was out of the car, it was definitely something that got my attention. While working at Copper Falls SP I came pretty close to both bears and wolves, but they always took off.
Like caching in the desert in the middle of nowhere, when I cache in the Chequamegon Nat’l Forest I carry a .357 magnum, but also try to make lots of noise. keys stay clipped on the outside so that they make more noise than just in my pockets. also, unlike when I’m hunting, I will step on branches and whatnot to make more noise.
it definitely varies from each of the regions across the US. I started caching in AZ, so I can definitely tell you what a 4 terrain looks like. I have a cache still active in AZ that’s only been found 4 times in about 3 years due mostly to the terrain. There are some down there even tougher to get to than mine. Imagine my thoughts when I see some rated as 4 when I get to WI and they only take 20 minutes to get to.
At the same time however, if you haven’t been exposed to 3,000 foot climbs, certain terrain here in the state may seem like a 4 compared to everything else around. That’s the case with a few caches outside of Madison anyway.
As a Lions Club member, we have swap meets for LC pins multiple times a year. One in Colby is our state swap meet, one in a neighboring state for our regional meet, plus we have one at each district convention and one at the state convention.
I don’t see why we can’t have a pathtag and coin swap somewhere once a year. I’m sure there would be just as much interest as what I see for LC pins.
what’s the average cost of rental in the area? it may be more cost effective than having to put mine on a trailer from Mellen.
I may make a trip over if it ends up to be on the 18th or 25th. have to wait another week for my work schedule.
If anyone is still contemplating this… I’ve just confirmed with a few friends and we will be doing the 8:30 am Sunday wave for the Minnesota race. still working out times for the WI race.
stumped! could not get Marla Hooch from A League of Their Own
update… took 30 questions to get Dick Trickle.
