in my first two years of caching, I was first stopped by a city police dept, then by US Border Patrol, and then a Bureau of Land Management Ranger. The police dept thought I was crazy for doing it, especially since it was nearly nightfall. They were the only ones who called me in, checked my car, confirmed my GPSr, etc.
The BP thought I was trying to circumvent their stop along the freeway… and the BLM guy thought kind of the same thing when I drove over one of their “secret” wire sensors out in the desert.
Of the three, the locals PD was definitely the most hostile toward me… and all three groups were aware of geocaching.

I still track my stats from the DGP, and I haven’t been there in 2.5 years. It’s also cool to see a few of my caches still accumulating points. One of mine is worth 46 points currently, since it’s only found twice a year on average (GC1864X).

the DGP is actually still expanding. When I lived in AZ, it was the only state completely part of the project. NV only wend as far as Vegas, most of NM was there, just a tip of TX, a little bit of CA and a touch of Mexico.

Now it includes 5 complete states, parts of CA and TX, plus two Mexico states.

I too have completed the county challenge, with my primary area being Dane, Rock, and other adjoining counties. I also consider north of HWY 8 to be my other territory, and love caching in the northwoods.

The one area (actually two) I wish I had more time to cache in would be in the LaCrosse and Hudson areas. There’s a great bit of scenery throughout the areas, and they both provide a good mix of caches.

I would best describe it as a way to expand their geocaching world. It’s a way to share experiences, tricks and tips, and find other cachers for bigger adventures.
It’s also a spot for fun contests and a great way to find out the happenings throughout the state and beyond.

All of the things I’ve listed above are why I’m here.

in reply to: COTM vs. Favorites #1941635

I think that expanding COTM was a great step in recognizing more of the great caches this state has to offer. I think switching to the geocaching.com version wouldn’t adequately recognize these caches. What number of “favorite” votes would be required before it gets recognized? Do it as a percentage of finders to votes? It just seems a little too diluted. Some may argue we’ve already diluted it too much already with the regional award, but considering the number of caches we have in the state, I believe more than just 12 per year deserve to get recognized.

I haven’t had the chance to attend a CITO in WI, but assisted with one in AZ when I lived there. My camelbak has a lot of extra pockets I never use except to fill with wrappers and such that I find.

We also do a roadside cleanup as members of the Verona Lions Club 3 times a year.

in reply to: WGA Events & Temporary Caches #1941603

I believe the move to permanent caches was a positive one. I think having permanent caches has increased the thought in the placement of the caches as well as the appreciation of the finders as a whole. It wasn’t a lot of fun finding a chintzy container with a scratch piece of paper in it, and as others mentioned just standing in line to sign the log.

Even back in 2008 our SW AZ Geocachers event eliminated temps and replaced with fully published caches. The response was overwhelmingly in favor of them.
Having permanent caches has meant legitimate spacing, containers, and searches.

so, no i don’t miss them, and would not like to see them back… at any type of event.

in reply to: Event Planning #1941836

As far as geocaching events go, I have hosted two here in Wisconsin. One was intended to be a small affair, the other a Lonely Cache Game event. While living in AZ I helped plan the largest event in that state back to back years as a member of the SouthWest Arizona Geocachers (SWAG).

In other worlds, being a high school and club soccer coach, I’ve been responsible for banquets, tournaments, and entire season schedules for 40+ players at any given time over the course of 7 years.

ski hill? psh, nothing. we had two cross country meets in our conference that were on ski hills (Drummond and Bayfield)… we only have to run this once. Bayfield’s course went up 4 different runs 😯 👿

i now plan on doing both… there is one in MN as well, and have friends in both locations that want to do it.

one of my friends in Texas has done at least two of them already… she loves it. I was seriously considering doing it if they came close. Now I’m set to go. oh, and tell Trekkin’ that it’s half the price of the marathons I do 😯

there’s always PW sightings… just have to know where to look. 😉
