hey GR… i have a race for you. Run on Water in Bayfield March 6… Bayfield to Madeline Island and back – that’s right, on the ice of lake superior – 5 miles. i still have my 3/8 inch spikes from cross country in hs… they work great!
02/01/2010 at 7:58 pm in reply to: WGA Banner in a Cache Listing: What Does/Should it mean? #1921315I have them on my caches, but it was more to show my affiliation with the group, not necessarily to solicit more members. That’s a bonus if it happens. I liken it to those that place Military Association of Geocachers (MAGC) as an example. It’s to show support of the group, with maybe a little bit of promotion.
A membership drive with a greater effort to reach out to cachers is something I feel can happen with a little effort and not take up a whole lot of resources.
The state park idea is also a great step forward, and will bring a lot to the geocaching community in Wisconsin once it gets going.
1. What if GC.com crashed and all the logs disappeared, what would you reaction & action be and WHY??
thanks to cachestats it wouldn’t be that big of an issue, it would just take a lot of copy/paste time, though I’d probably write even longer logs on some caches where my first logs just didn’t do justice.
2. Hot topic….Though it is a choice here in WI, to log temp finds in one cache…What if GC.com was set up to not accept more than one find/attendance per cache log…what would your reaction & action be on the matter and why??
I would applaud the decision. We hide caches with the idea of permanency at their location. If it isn’t a permanent cache, it doesn’t fit the guidelines, so it shouldn’t be logged.
3. A repeat question of sorts from last yr….What if you had $5000 of WGA funds, to do what you like …what would you do with it????
I would like to see what membership would feel to be the best way to use the resource. Infusing some of it toward the State Park program does seem to be a good start though.
all of middle school and high school the only people who actually called me Brian were family members. all classmates, teammates, and teachers called me Mac.
when i went to college, the nickname stuck with the soccer team, but other people would pass by and call me Brian. i didn’t respond because i didn’t think they were talking to me!I think it’s a great idea and would personally contact the superintendents and other higher ups that I have worked with in the past. I think even if the expense of the containers, etc falls to the individual cachers, there will be more than enough willing to make this happen.
a somewhat related question off the top of my head… are there any parks in the state that offer GPSr’s to patrons to rent or borrow?
double post on the same topic. the other is in the candidates corner
mine would also go to Deejay. as a reviewer, i believe he has a better understanding of what comes down the official pipeline at the frog pond.
Because I am currently only substitute teaching and officiating, I can usually make my own schedule of work and play. On days that I don’t sub, I tutor students outside of school who have been suspended or are on pre-expulsion plans. That way, once/if they are reinstated, they are still up to speed with the rest of the class.
I am also an active member of the Lions Club. Two of the focuses of the LC are Diabetes and vision. This is near and dear to my heart due to multiple family members with diabetes. My father passed away last February from complications arising from diabetes. Both he and my grandfather were Lions members when I was a child, and my grandmother is a Lioness, so I take extra pride in being a member.
because I don’t live in the same state as any of my favorite teams (yeah i said it… no packers or badgers lol), I don’t have to decide if i should stay home and watch the game or go caching… but it’s nice to be able to check the scores of the games occasionally.
i don’t really use it on the phone for anything else.1. What got you into caching and how long have you been doing it?
3 years… I managed to get into geocaching by accident. I heard from a rugby teammate and fellow teacher about wreckage of a WWII bomber in the mountains east of Yuma, AZ. and decided I would love to climb up to see it. After searching the internet and newspapers in the area, I couldn’t find a location on the map, until I came across the coordinates on the geocaching.com website. At the same time, I happened to win a few dollars in the Super Bowl pool, so decided to purchase a GPSr so I could make the journey to the bomber. I got stuck in my car on the first attempt, but made the long hike/climb the second day. All total, my first cache was a 2 mile hike to the base of the mountain, then nearly 2000 feet up.
2. What area of the state are you from?
I currently live in Madison, but grew up in Mellen (near Lake Superior)
3. How much of the state have you geocached in that is away from your home area? ?? of 72 counties
all 72 counties. I take frequent trips to Hudson and to Mellen (once a month or so)
4. how far from home are you willing to travel for events and how far in the past have you traveled to go to an event?
I’ve traveled all the way north of Hayward from Madison for an event, and have also gone out of state to attend them.
5. Are you members of any other geocaching association: Michigan’s MiGO, Minnesota Geocachers, GONIL, Big bob’s bulletin board, etc.
still a member of SouthWest Arizona Geocachers (SWAG) and the Deep Southwest Geocaching Project (http://dgpstats.com)
#1- Would you attend this event?
not only would I attend, I would be more than willing to do a majority of the legwork on it. I used to work at Copper Falls State Park, so I still have contacts there to make it happen.
#2a- How would you help promote this event and educate local cachers non-geocachers of the WGA?
contacting local papers besides the ads would get us some press. most do an outdoor section, and there’s always room in local section for it as well
#2b- The idea of placing a few small news paper ads in a few of the local papers was brought up to help promote this event. Should the WGA help pay for the ads?
I think paying for the ads is reasonable. the expense would be quite small (they aren’t exactly the MJ-S), and like others have mentioned, the Sunday shoppers and whatnot would be free. Don’t forget, smaller papers would also post it for free (Mellen Weekly-Record for sure… i know the Editor/Publisher)
#3 Should WGA equipment (such as grills and such) be made available for this event?
they should be made available, but depending on the location and local cachers, there may already be more than enough grills
#4 Do you believe that a WGA regional event(camp-out/picnic) should be held at least once a year north of highway 64?
maybe not once a year (every other, every 2?), but within the rotation would be a good start
i tend to agree with cheezehead on this one… you still have 160 miles from Wausau to Ashland and 150 from Lake Wissota to Superior. It’s also 160 miles from Madison to Wausau… so there still really hasn’t been a WGA event in the northern 1/3 of the state (and that’s being generous… technically Wausau is about 55% of the distance from the southern border to Lake Superior).
I’d be satisfied with the BOD contacting members planning events in the northern half of the state and reach out with assistance in creating a WGA Regional Event instead of expecting them to come to the WGA for help. I grew up in the very northern part of the state so i tend to travel up there for family quite frequently, and the majority of the cachers up there don’t even realize there is a state association… those that do don’t participate due to it being a “southern thing.”
I see no reason why a CITO event can’t be created for this stretch by the WGA BOD twice a year (that’s what our Lion’s Club schedules anyway). The event doesn’t have to be full blown or extravagant, just people there to do the clean up. I looked for other states doing this, and saw different Montana, California, Arizona, Ohio and Texas regional associations already doing this same thing. With the location we already have, I’d predict at least 20 cachers showing up, which is more than enough to cover the road (we only use 10-12 for our stretch).
Soliciting the designs from our members gives the coins a much more personal identity to the WGA, and the uniqueness that both of the member designs we have used so far is what has made them so successful and desirable. Proof of that is the requests I had from friends in Arizona for the last two coins when they saw the finished product.
I think after 4 coins, we should have some idea of how many we will sell even before the final design is announced. With having extra coins as an organization, they could be used as prizes for multiple events or the LCG. I received a coin that I already had, but was able to use it for a trade later on. If I wasn’t the trading type, it would be a great FTF prize (which I’ve also done).
