  • Think most are saying the same thing …

There are two kinds that are very annoying…

    1) Some caches are hidden just as ego trips and numbers for the hider…. several examples of someone just walking a trail or path or even roadway and dropping caches every 600 feet with some name concocted for interest .. One of the guiding principles for caches is I believe the requirement that if the only reason a person goes to the spot where the cache is hidden is to find it, it should not be approved as a geocache…. Wisconsin reviewers should keep that in mind to prevent what exists in some areas and certainly in AZ.

    2) In AZ, there are thousands of examples of someone that walked a trail, (and even state highways) and dropped  containers every 600ft – 1/2 mile and normally cover it with gravel and/or rocks… Most have no value of being there and calling them “Arizona Style” just means they are buried under rocks , pebbles, gravel, sand…. I understand that caches are NOT to be buried completely or even partially….. this is ignored in AZ and being 100% covered out of sight with rocks, gravel, pebbles, sand, is still being buried in my book. There are examples of dozens hidden in the gravel between the curbs in the parking lots of malls and large stores…….I ignored those but wasted time driving to general area…………….

    OK Thanks….
Good luck with the hip surgery recovery… know a number of friends that had hip replacements and are happy with their results..
I’ll reach out to Huggybear2u about my idea for a local event.

    Good evening….
Actually, I’ve checked the “Oh Deer-and Albinos two” every two days and it’s still in original spot in good shape..
Antigo did have 8-10″ of snow but cache is fine and accessible if one doesn’t mind stepping in snow to walk up to it.
I noticed tracks there again yesterday within 6″ but not right up to it.
My Garmin 550t seems to be consistent + repeatable and three others found it in first week so thinking all’s well.

I had expressed interest in meeting another local geocacher or two so I could pick their brain .. and discuss an idea I’m working on with a local organization…
Do you get over to Antigo often?

in reply to: Hello from Antigo area #1972965

    Did it….
Submitted registration request for a cache I hid……now in for review and approval ..
And in process of documenting two others for near future….

Appreciate the thought and understand … Suspect that one of the members in area may take me up on breakfast, coffee or lunch sometime in near future and I can pick their mind on doing the process correctly.

I get down to De Forest frequently and go to all the Badger games as well but weekends usually are full while there with grandsons football and soccer games every weekend as well.

Different topic but you probably know.. Last year there was a cache at the De Forest Veterans Park.. believe it was Buoy, Oh Buoy so the clue was pretty clear… was going to swing in and take a try on that one but noticed this AM that it’s no longer mapped or listed… It no longer exists?

Can cancel my request for guidance on finding the cache map… I found the pathway again on the main website and now remember how filing the log works .. and the directions to get a new cache registered…..

If one of the members here local to Antigo would have a few minutes some day, please PM me if you would be willing to spend a few minutes sharing your expertise on registering a cache….. I’ll buy the coffee or lunch if you would spend a few minutes…

    Back again ….
Have been unable to pursue this hobby like I planned but hoping to get into it a little more ….
    I’ve found 3 or 4 around Antigo that I looked for…
I purchased a Garmin Oregon 550t that I’m hopeful will be useful and more accurate than my iphone 4s – charging up the batteries as I type…
I just renewed myself on the website(s) … have forgotten how to get to the map of the local caches (which I remember having been in including a couple comments when I found them) .. Can someone PM me on how to find that list / map again…
After I get caught up with the ones around here, I need to review again what it takes to get one or more registered….Have what I believe would be three really good ones…..

    Thanks for the information..
I just found that I can get a new Garmin Oregon 550T for approx $290 …. supposedly regularly $499….
For the $290, would that be about the best deal around ?

The only GPS unit I have is the Free GPS app for the iphone .. it’s accuracy is 5 meters (16.4 ft) radius … Is taht about as good as they get ?
I understand this phone if probably pretty limited in it’s versatility if one can’t get a strong signal but it’s all I have right now….
Looking at maybe getting the Garmin E trex 30 Bundle .. Is that one easy to learn and any more accurate ?

    Thanks for the welcomes…
I finally figured out what was confusing on the website issue…. I have waymarked a few places last year in Antigo and The Kovac Planetarium in Monoco as BlueSnowOwl and as a part of that process has an account there which apparently included registry at http://www.geocaching.com whether I wanted to at the time or not…. In any case, everytime I tried to sign in as WhiteEagle and got sent to their website links, it required me to sign back in under my previous username. So be it, I’m working with it as it’s their rules.
Look forward to getting better in this whole arena.

    OK …
    Thank you ..
apparently misunderstood a little bit about this specific site’s scope – and apparently it’s function/objectives …. apparently I had an account at http://www.geocaching for year or so when I did some waymarking, but couldn’t get that account to work this week when your website sent me into it. – so now have different one there which I will make sure it stays active ….and will go search for answers over there.

So.. I’m signed in to this forum, and anytime I click on a tab looking for information, it jumps into the http://www.geocaching.com website which of course is a whole different sign in process and username etc… Guess I can understand that now… Can find different posts and leads on geocaches in NC Wis, and can find “lonely ones” , etc… .. Found maps and lists of the geocaching humans involved, but..
Haven’t found the page or link that I can go to which will tell me where geocaches are in a defined city, county, regions etc…
Sure there’s a link to where I can define a city, zip, county, region or whatever and it can list or show the local ones available..
If finding this list or a map of the actual geocaches is the first test for newbies, I’ve failed so far….

Maybe you can help me from the start…
I obviously have an account at
wi-geocaching.com … I received the confirming email stating my username .. and my password .. so I thought all was well… I was able to post the introduction .. and I can get to this forum…
    BUT ..
even tho I stay logged in, when I change to another tab section of the website, it immediately drops me, refers to me as a “visitor” – won’t let me go to other pages, and then refuses to let me log in using the same info ….. am I only a visitor-ing member until I say something intelligent ?
