  • in reply to: Candidate Question | What's Your Special Skill? #2061847

I can honestly say that there is not one of those qualities that I identify with more than any other. Finding a balance of these skills in the ever changing situations of life is necessary to be successful in everything I do. My career requires me to not only use numbers, pictures and words, but also interact with people on a constant basis. I need to use numbers to understand if the machine I am working on is functioning properly. Pictures convey the design of the machine as the engineers intended, and I use them to convey ideas to others. Words describe theory of operation, safe operation, and necessary maintenance of the machinery. I also use my words to communicate with others through emails and other documents to successfully convey problems and possible solutions to issues with our machinery. Interacting with people is a very important part of my everyday as well. Not only do I have to understand the needs of the machine operators so that I can maintain the equipment properly, but as a representative of my union brothers and sisters in my local, I have to interact with them in a way that I understand their needs to feel comfortable working for our company.

Reflecting on how I must manage all four skills, I feel that interacting with people is the most important to me. Developing relationships, whether friends or coworkers, is what drives me. Not everyone is going to get along in the same ways, but I strive to build an environment where everyone feels comfortable in their role.

in reply to: Candidate Question | Leadership #2061846

Leadership is a skill. Bad leaders use force, coercion, and their position of power to further their own agenda. Good leaders find the skills of others and help develop and nurture those skills to advance everyone. Building on the skills of others makes it easier for everyone to succeed. Success can be a process and a goal. To succeed, you need to have a definite result in mind, but success can also be measured by the growth of the team as a result of honing their skills. Even if the end result is not the expected outcome, if the team learned and grew, there is some measure of success.

This is Aimee of zeeman_clan.  Reading the recent comment in regards to the drinking at the picnic, I am rather curious how you see this as something to concern yourself with?

I was one of the LEGAL adults drinking at the park that ALLOWS the consumption of alcoholic beverages and you think it is the WGAs place to say I cannot? That is interesting to me.

How is that any different than smoking? How about dressing in a shirt that is too revealing or shorts that are too short?  I have tattoos…is that something that I should consider covering up?

You may think I am taking this too far, but I don’t see it that way.  No one was out of line.  No one broke a law. Everyone was kind to each other and there to enjoy a family friendly event together.  Kids there or not, I don’t see this as something that is out if line.  I will not apologize if someone felt offended that I was enjoying an alcoholic drink there.

I have been to hundreds  of fAmily friendly events that have allowed drinking.  Not sure how this one should be held to a different standard.

As far as people approaching you, the difference might be that your coworkers deal with you face to face where we don’t.

Very valid point. Since being elected, I’ve made it a point to engage with others in the organization whom I wouldn’t normally approach. It was a little out of my comfort zone at first, but I had to realize we are just geocachers out having a good time. I would feel flattered if someone were to come up to me at an event and tell me they were enjoying it, or even to tell me that it was the worst event that they had been to. It’s feedback to help me do my job better. If someone didn’t feel comfortable in a face to face, I wouldn’t mind an email, they’re available on the website, and I would be able to make it a point to talk to that person face to face about their thoughts and concerns the next time I see them. The bottom line is that I want to feel that the members are engaged in what we are doing, not complaining that we are falling short of their expectations. I know it may be a long process, but I would like to find ways that allow everyone to participate in the WGA in the capacity that they feel comfortable. Ideas like this are constantly being discussed, but there are times when you have to make mistakes in order to find the right idea. I know members have good ideas, I want to hear them.

This seems like the perfect place to post this since it’s about anything and everything, geocaching and non-geocaching alike. I’ve never been very vocal on forums because I don’t find much use for them. A lot of the times posts are made and after a couple of statements on the topic, it takes a terrible turn and the questions of the original OP are lost. This thread is a great idea because it gives people the opportunity to deviate from a topic and no one says much about it. Random chatter that everyone seems to enjoy. I personally would rather have face to face engagement with people. Not that I hate technology, but I like people…at least I do until they give me a reason not to.

That being said, I’ve felt a little disappointed recently. As much as I’ve been trying to get along with everyone and make decisions in the best way I can, I can’t help but feel criticised by some discussions I’ve seen on the forums of this page. In a single year, I have found that the opinions towards the board of directors varies greatly. I’ve been indirectly called a glorified event planner. I’ve heard that we don’t do enough to support the needs of members that want more events. I’ve also heard that we are too involved in events and the membership needs to be more involved. I take it personally when someone tells me that I’m not doing my job right when there isn’t a defined direction to the job. Our organization has a mission to promote geocaching and the preservation of our wonderful playground known as the State of Wisconsin. That mission is realized through events that bring together like minded people. Our organization isn’t the events, it’s the people at those events. If keyboard commandos want to criticise how I’m doing my job, they are more than welcome to help me. There isn’t much of a surprise to how and when events are held, volunteers are welcome at each and every one. You may be told that there isn’t anything that needs done and you should enjoy the event, or someone may ask you to watch the grill so someone can take a short break. It’s not about what you do to help the organization, it’s that you want to that makes a difference.

I was told in my first hour of work today that I was very approachable, and it was a welcome change to some other people in my department…funny, not many people in this organization have approached me. I’m willing to listen to ideas and work with people bringing those ideas, but to be criticised from afar is not going to make me value those opinions.

It’s election time, and if the current board isn’t taking the WGA in the direction you want to see it go, here’s your opportunity to change that. I understand that when I’m up for reelection I don’t get voted back onto the board, another person is more qualified than I am to help lead our organization, but it won’t be because I didn’t try my hardest to make Wisconsin a great place to play. I just hope that the opinions of a few don’t discourage others from trying to make our organization the best it can be.

in reply to: Board Member Vacancy Proposed Bylaws Change #2056718

I had to read it a few times…slowly. Turns out that the proposed bylaw is very well written and you had completely until the very last sentence. This one just baffled me. Assuming that an officer has resigned, how does the board get back to nine members if the replacement of the officer is delayed? Are you meaning to say that the “Replacement of an officer and returning the board to nine members may be delayed until the general election as long as the duties…” Steve

The officers are elected from the board, therefore immediately addressing the officer position would only provide the opportunity for the remaining five at large board members to serve in the officer position. The last sentence gives the board the option to delay selecting an officer so that the newly selected board member can be considered for the position.

in reply to: Pathtag Help (First Time Trade) #2055245

Hi there. Mrs Zeemanclan here.  I will admit it.  I am a pathtag addict.  I will see if I can’t steer you in the right direction.   Since you said you had people offer trades to you, if you go to your pathtag.com homepage and click on my stuff on the top of the screen, you should then see “my trade manager”.  There is where you have the options to “view open”, “accept”, “send” and “log.”  If you like the tag they have offered to trade with you, you can click on the accept trade.  You also have room to send a message.  This is where you would include your name and mailing address.  Once you click “accept”, this trade will move to the “send” section where it will be until you send it.  The best way to send pathtags is in a coin envelope (you can find these at any office supply store).  However, I was only able to purchase about 500 at a time, which probably will not help you in this case.  The easiest way would be to tape the pathtag (preferably still in the plastic wrapper) in between two index cards and place it in a card, or just send as is.  As long as the pathtag isn’t floating around the envelope by itself…most of those end up escaping the envelope.

After you package it and send it, click sent.  This trade will sit in your “view open” until your trading partner sends theirs.  Then it will end up in the “log tags” portion of your trade manager.  Once your tag arrives to their home, they will log it with the code on the back of the pathtag…and you will do the same.  Then the trade will be complete!

I hope this makes sense.  Its kind of hard to explain, but super easy and fun!  I have been part of the community for quite some time, and have over 2500 completed online trades.  Time goes by pretty quickly!

If you have questions, or would like to trade with me online just to get the idea, please let me know!  I will be happy to trade with you so you can get the hang of things.  Otherwise, I hope my explanation helps!

    Have fun!!

I don’t read this thread much, (I should, it does give a lot of insight, I just don’t have that kind of time), but the conversation was brought to my attention and I would like to voice my opinion. The WGA should make use of every available property that fits the needs of the event that is being hosted. If a county park fits that bill, by all means, it should be used.  If I remember correctly, the most recent event was held at a city park. I myself find that any extended geocaching trip is planned so I know what to expect as far as where I’m staying, and what I’m going to be able to do when there. I don’t need consistency to dictate my trip, it’s all about new adventures.

Now to the second issue that seems to be present in this topic. The spread of the Emerald Ash Borer is regulated through quarantine of specific counties. EAB and Gypsy Moths can both be transported through firewood, and the WDNR has established very standard rules for moving firewood. A quick Google search yielded a plethora of information on both species and where firewood can be moved. The state parks all require that wood be certified by the DATCP. County and private parks may not require this, but must follow firewood movement rules established by the quarantine.

My two cents, see you guys in this thread the next time I am directed to it, or find myself in an airport for 5 hours with nothing to do

in reply to: Keeping the LCG fresh #2053709

I have to agree that the same old ammo can full of swag doesn’t attract a lot of people as a prize, and seeing your name on a plaque makes people feel like they’ve accomplished something. Who knows if different prizes would attract more and different cachers?  Trial and error would be the only way to tell.

To my original point, I don’t think it’s about more caches on the list, but that after 6 months of being unfound on the LCG that it gets a break for 2 months.  If we could set up the model I envision, a cache wouldn’t make the list if had been on for three consecutive. After a two month absence, it would be back on the list.  This would kind of create a rotation of sorts for the ones that aren’t readily sought out.

I think the Dells has one too (why wouldn’t they).  A friend at work has been to several, and I think that was the one he said was his favorite.

in reply to: Escape rooms #2053530

I have not tried an escape room yet, but I am excited to try one.  In fact, I was talking with Mrs. Zeeman in regards to trying one soon.  After a little discussion on who it would be fun to do one with, we thought of puzzle cachers. What better fun than getting a group of people together to discuss puzzles, solve puzzles, and try to get out of an escape room.  I’m still in the logistics stage of an event, but I think it could be a lot of fun.  Now that I know others would be interested, I’m even more excited about it. If anyone has any thoughts, insights, or ideas, let me know and maybe we can collaborate on something.

As the nomination and campaign period for this years Board of Directors election comes to a close, I would like to make one final post.  To start, I would like to thank the unknown members of the WGA who thought enough of me to nominate me for this election and second my nomination.  I would also like to thank the members who took the time to come up with some very fun and very interesting questions for the candidates.  And I would like to thank the other candidates for providing such great answers to the questions.  I would like to wish good luck to all.

The reason I felt that my “getting to know me” post was the appropriate place for this post is because I can say more things about myself than I could at the start of this campaign.  I have learned a lot about myself as a person.  I have a mission statement that I didn’t have before, and I am trying every day to make sure that I “Keep Things in Perspective.”  I know I have many traits that would be helpful to the BOD and the WGA in general.  I realize that I fail a lot in life, but I learn from those failures.

I’ve also learned a lot about what geocaching means to me.  I know that the events I have attended have built some great friendships and this inspires me to attend more events to build more of these friendships.  I know that I search out some obscure caches because they can be the most challenging, bring out some of our deepest emotions, and show us some of the most beautiful natural and man made places in this world.  I’ve learned that I would like to see geocaching grow and continue to be the challenging pastime that we all love.

Finally, I have discovered that I really want to serve on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association to continue the mission of growing our beloved sport in the state of Wisconsin.  I want to develop connections with cachers throughout the state to bring events and other cachers to all reaches of our wonderful 65,556 square mile playground.  I want to make sure that our geocaching adventure continues for years into the future.

Again, I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to nominate, question and vote for our new Board of Directors.

in reply to: Candidate Question: Three Best Qualities #2053470

After some long and hard reflection on who I am and what I have to offer to the WGA, I have finally made a list of my three best qualities as they would be most beneficial to the BOD.

I listen as much as I speak.  I know there are people, particularly my wife, who would say that I talk a lot, and she would probably say I don’t listen to her at all.  I have to disagree with the last part of that statement. I do talk a lot, but when it comes to discussions with others, I do listen to what they have to say. It may not change my opinion, but that doesn’t mean what they have to say has no merit in the conversation. Listening, especially to someone who has more experience than I do, helps me learn and grow to be a better part of the team.

I like being social.  I don’t always jump into a crowd and introduce myself, but given an opportunity to socialize with others, I will.  Being a member of the BOD would give me a chance to meet other cachers in a way that I couldn’t before.  I would like the ability to introduce myself as a BOD member who is interested in what they would like to see from the WGA. Socializing is so much easier when you have a good opening line like that.

Finaly, I am a great troubleshooter.  Day in and day out, I have to quickly diagnose problems and come up with the best possible solution.  Spend too much time trying to figure what went wrong is detrimental to keeping everything running smoothly. Not figuring out the root cause of a problem can sometimes make it come back worse.  A quick, efficient solution is always best when it comes to an obstacle, regardless if it is an inoperative piece of machinery, or a snafu at a geocaching event.

My posts should in no way be considered as the views or opinions of the WGA or its Board of Directors. All posts made under my name are my personal opinions only.

My experience working as a team is that everyone on that team has to pull their own weight.  My team that I work with on a daily basis makes up less than 3% of our total employees, and we are responsible for the maintenance on all of our machines. If we don’t work as a team, we stand to cost our company thousands of dollars an hour.  Teamwork is essential for smooth daily operation.

Smooth operation is just as important for the WGA, it just doesn’t cost as much if we have a bump in the road.  Working together as a team, the BOD should be able make decisions quickly and easily, in the best interests of the organization. While there may be differences of opinions between board members, as a team they should be able to come to an agreement on the best course to follow.

It is evident by the responses to these candidate questions, that there are a lot of different ideas that are going to be brought to the board with the incoming board members, but I’m sure that everyone will come together as a team and make great decisions that will benefit the WGA in a very positive way.
