    Hi Sloughfoot,

It was great to meet you guys on the trails last week, out at Mirror Lake when ya told me about this little streak. Glad to see you are keeping it going. It is a very amazing thing, especially if ya can keep it going in Jan when it gets 30 below.

Keep us posted on your progress.

    Hi Dan,

Congratulations on your milestone. I hope we cross paths again someday, and maybe even hit a few together, something easier than the Gauntlet, though.

in reply to: Wisconsin DeLorme Challenge has a Winner! #1766069

I guess it was more of a personal challenge, and I loved visiting all of the last pages. There are a lot of great places to cache off of the beaten track in this state.

I got the final page last Sunday, I forget the page number, but it was Bertom Bottoms in southwest Wisconsin, along the Mississippi. I have next Mon – Wed off, so hope to go to southeast Wisconsin to find the final then.

The biggest challenge came when my daughter wrecked my new computer, so I am without a computer at home for a few weeks, which means no gsak and no pqs. God, I hate it when I cannot adequately feed my addictions.

Congratulations to Da Bloodhound. I finally got to cache with DB this past Sunday, and we had a great day, that is until I led him into a rockpile on a slope, and he tore his Achilles Tendon. We spent most of the rest of the afternoon in the local ER…..Man, that made me feel bad, but obviously not as bad he felt. Of course, he did get a lil Vicodin for his trouble, but that still has got to hurt.

But DB is still Da Man. He even got one cache after tearing his Achilles, a nice scenic little park and log known as Bertom Bottoms.

If ya think of it, send Da Bloodhound a get well email.

in reply to: La Crosse Caches #1765988

I havent done all of the La Crosse caches, but have done most of em, and there are a lot of good ones down there. If ya are looking for a quick park and grab in a very scenic, interesting spot, with a very cool hide, you should check out GCQDVF, Pettibone Gazebo. It will take ya less than 5 minutes to find the cache, and ya can park right next to it, but you will probably want to stay a bit longer to look around.

Probably the quintessial La Crosse tourist spot is Granddad Bluff, and there is a great cache there. It is Granddad Quarry Bluff Cache, GCNHAV. The walk to that one will take ya about 30 minutes, but it is worth it.

If it’s regular old beer, I’d share it.. If it’s Red or Cherry Wheat…..roll me for it!! LOL[/quote]

It was a case of Busch Lite, which tastes like flavored water, in my view. But, can I still roll ya for it???? I still have 21 cans left.

Big, big thanks to the Honeybunnies for allowing us to be a part of their big day. It was a beautiful wedding, on a great afternoon, and we enjoyed being there, even if it did slow down our geocaching for the weekend. It was great to be a witness of the greatest day of your life, at least up to now, a day that will likely be your greatest day ever up until your first child is born. (I am hoping a baby on the back of the Honeybunnies will slow you guys down enough that I will be able to keep up.)

in reply to: Rabble Rousing…to post or not to post? #1765641

Well, first off, I have to admit that I dont read these forums as closely as some folks do, generally checking for geocaching related news and views once a week or so, so I may not fully understand all the rabble rousing. But since others here post there opinions freely appear no better informed than myself, I guess I should feel free to post my opinion as well. Plus, I found a case of beer at a cache this morning, and have already started into it, and I think that is what must fuel some of these crazy threads. So here goes:

First of all, I feel that the BOD is doing an excellent job, and that some of we WGA members who are non-board members need to stand up and say so. I really appreciate, for example, the work on the new web page, the De Lorme challenge calculator, the work with the DNR, the cache rescue effort, and the hosting and development of great events. I am quite surprized that anyone would actually have a legitimate gripe about the hard work that our volunteer BOD members do.

Second of all, I cannot let the personal attacks against individual BOD members go unchallenged. The individuals that I have met are very dedicated to the sport, and have offered much of themselves and their time to make the sport better in Wisconsin. Those who would suggest that some BOD members are “not on the trails” are both ill-informed and foolish.

Third, I have to say that rabble rousing in general can be a good thing. After all the signers of the Declaration of Independence were really nothing but rabble rousers. When rabble rousing is not a good thing is when it is done without a purpose to improve things. It is much easier to critizise others than it is to do something positive yourself. Iif you want to improve the world, ya gotta do more than just bitch and whine about other people, and hope someone makes a minor faux pas that you can make fun of. To me, that is just a very weird way of getting one’s jollies, and really does not contribute much of worth.

I just wanted to add my kudos for making it to 200. Hope to get a chance to talk to ya more at the next event, or maybe on the trails.

I know I am a bit late posting this, but I agree, OnePaddleShort put on a heck of a great event in Wausau. Congratulations on the great event and reaching 600 finds.

More importantly, though, I was very impressed how involved the whole family is on your team, and how the kids really enjoy spending time with you and spending time caching. It is great that this is an activity that families can do together.

I am in campsite #1, staying overnight in a tent on loan from bnb.

will stop by the main shelter area around 1 or so, to see if anyone wants to go get a few local caches with me prior to the event.

in reply to: How did you find out about geocaching? #1764704

In my case, I learned about geocaching from my neighbor, Dick. I use to walk thru his back yard to access a nearby public woods on a frequent basis with my dog. I noticed a place in the woods that often had tracks going to in the snow, that made no sense. I couldnt figure out why people kept walking to a particular part of the woods, and only there during the winter.

I mentioned it to Dick, and he told me it was geocachers. He had a gps unit, and showed me how it works. That place in the snow, was then the first cache that I found, though not the first that I logged, since it was part of a multi without a log book, and a fairly difficult cache, courtesy of the Bobcat.

Unfortunately, Dick died shortly after that, but he lives on in our memories. Bobcat and Dick’s wife Carol put out a great cache in memory of Dick, that is one of my favorites, right where I use to walk across his land. That cache page can be seen by clicking here:
